The 2026 World Cup was held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was played in 16 modern stadiums.

22:53 BST - Once again this man delivered for his team when it mattered.
22:41 BST - England boss Thomas Tuchel will have his substitutions debated for weeks and months to come, but in his post-match interview he said he has no regrets about the game as a whole.
"At the moment, no regrets," he told the BBC.
"The team gave everything, and we were very, very close. I think we deserved to be up 1-0. We played one of our better matches, maybe the best match in the circumstances.
"The team was top; we couldn't bring it over the line. At the moment, no regrets."
He did, however, believe that his team were "too passive" after taking the lead.
"We're disappointed, we were so close but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances," he said.
"We could not turn the ball possession around and then conceded so many crosses, chances and shots.
"We were close but couldn't keep the level up after we scored."
22:36 BST - England captain Harry Kane told the BBC: "Gutted for the boys, gutted for everyone - the team, the staff, the fans.
"We played a good game the large majority of it. When we went 1-0 up we seemed to try and hold on, which at this level is not enough.
"So, just gutted because we've worked so hard to be here and the lads have given every last bit of running, blood, sweat, tears.
"So to fall short is just gutting."
On what he and his team have learned from this World Cup, Kane said: "We had a lot of good moments at this tournament, a lot of good games and another semi-final.
"We talk about knocking on the door, we're close, we just need to find that missing piece late in the tournament.
"These tournaments take it out of you with so much effort, pressure and mentality. We've shown that throughout the six or seven weeks we've been together but we're just missing that final piece."

22:16 BST - An unwanted stat for any side, but the fact that they've been to the semi-finals in two of the last three tournaments also tells a story of a team heading in the right direction.
22:10 BST - It's been a hell of a ride, and there was genuine belief that this England side could go all the way, but once again the quality of this Argentina team has shone when it counted.

21:52 BST - GOAL! Argentina have taken the lead! Alexis Mac Allister crashes a shot against the post but England can't clear the danger. Lionel Messi gathers the rebound, surges down the right and delivers a superb cross for Lautaro Martínez to power a header into the net. England had dropped deeper to protect their lead, but the defensive approach has backfired in the cruellest fashion.

21:48 BST - The big problem for England is that Thomas Tuchel had just made changes with defence in mind, including bringing on Dan Burn. England have a whole bunch of defenders out there and are looking at a potentially tough extra time ahead if one of their stars up front can't save them.
21:47 BST - GOAL! Argentina are level and it's that man Enzo Fernandez! He gets the ball from the corner and fires another one towards Jordan Pickford's goal and this time the England man can do nothing to stop it.
21:46 BST - CLOSE! Enzo Fernandez fizzes one towards goal but Jordan Pickford lifts it over the crossbar.
21:36 BST - CHANCE! Wow! Alexis Mac Allister puts in a header which looks to be going in but cannons off the post. England look to be holding on here, and time is against their opponents.
21:29 BST - SAVE! Now it's Jordan Pickford who saves the day. Lionel Messi puts in a cross and Nico Gonzalez heads it towards the bottom left of goal, but Pickford shows quick reflexes to make the stop and keep England in front.

Argentina go long from the back and Djed Spence is beaten for pace by Julián Álvarez, who drives a low effort towards Jordan Pickford's near post - but the England goalkeeper reacts well to make the save. Álvarez has another go immediately thereafter but can only fire into the side netting.

16:57 BST - England manager Thomas Tuchel is expecting a tight game, with no clear favourite. The German admitted that any team can be beaten, including Argentina and the Three Lions.
"We've prepared for the best version of Argentina. We hope, expect and demand the best from ourselves tomorrow for a top-level match.
"I think every team in the world can be beaten. Argentina can, and so can we. And both teams will try to prove it," he pointed out.

16:52 BST - Argentina star Rodrigo de Paul spoke to the media ahead of tonight's match, insisting they have treated every fixture as if it were a final.
"Everyone loves playing in a World Cup. Every match is a final; that's always how we've approached it," he said.
"We're facing a team we've never played before, a powerhouse that has done very well in this World Cup, just like the other four teams still here. It's going to be a great match."
