British and Irish Lions legends Gavin Hastings, Ieuan Evans and Tommy Bowe watched from the sidelines as rugby’s mental health charity LooseHeadz completed the longest game of rugby in history.

The men’s and women’s matches each kicked off at 8am on Wednesday at Mullingar Rugby Club in Ireland, with the women’s match lasting 26 hours and 33 minutes to surpass the previous record of 24 hours, 5 minutes and 15 seconds.

England Red Roses players, including Tamara Taylor, took part to support the initiative which was run in partnership with the Wooden Spoon charity.

The men’s game was aiming to beat the record of 30 hours 29 minutes and 41 seconds, and did so comfortably, ending just after 8pm on Thursday to record a time just over 36 hours.

Both games, which raised over £100,000 in donations, will be Guinness world records once officially verified.

“Congratulations to LooseHeadz and Wooden Spoon for a phenomenal achievement,” said Hastings.

“I have huge respect and admiration for all the men and women who took part in this world record-breaking feat in Mullingar over the past two days.

“As rugby’s mental health charity, LooseHeadz is tackling the stigma of mental health and the money raised from this challenge will go towards ensuring every rugby club has a dedicated mental health lead.

“It is amazing moment to celebrate, and we can now come together as a rugby community once again tonight, to launch the ‘Hugby’ campaign at Aviva Stadium.”

The Hugby campaign will launch in the Lions’ Test against Argentina in Dublin on Friday night, where players and fans alike will be encouraged to hug one another immediately after Argentina’s national anthem in an attempt to help address the stigma of mental health in rugby.

Players who took part in the record-breaking matches in Mullingar will also parade the pitch at half-time at the Aviva Stadium.
