The 2025 Epsom Derby is almost here, and Britain's richest flat horse race is ready to delight the crowds again.

The 2025 Epsom Derby kicks off this weekend. Britain's richest flat horse race and one of the most prestigious gives jockeys and their horses the chance to etch their names into horse racing history.

The annual race, first run in 1780, has a prize pot of £1.5m with the winner pocketing over £900,000. Horses can only run the race once in their life because the entry criteria only allow three-year-old horses to compete. This means they have one chance to get into the record books, and on Saturday, we will know which one of the 19 runners that will be.

When and where?

The Epsom Derby runs from Friday, 6th of June, to Saturday, 7th of June. It all happens at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Epsom, Surrey. The main race takes place on Saturday at 3:30pm (BST), but there are plenty of other races happening over the two days.

The Derby starts Friday with Ladies' Day, which has the Coronation Cup and the Oaks. There are seven races in total on Friday, starting at 1:30pm. Gates open at 11am, meaning punters can get down nice and early before the first race.

On Saturday, there are eight races with the first at 1:00pm, and the Derby at 3:30pm. Gates also open here at 11am.

Previous winners

The Derby has been won by the same jockey and trainer combination for the past two years. Jockey Ryan Moore and trainer Aidan O’brien have a deadly combination, winning in 2023 with Augustine Rodin and on City of Troy in 2024. Jockey Moore has actually won the race four times in the past 15 years, but O’Brien has 10 Derby wins as a trainer, with eight of those coming since 2010.
