"Following the national manager's press conference and after speaking with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team's camp", Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed in a message posted on his various socisl media accounts.
"In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always devoted myself", added the 41-year-old forward.
"Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, the best of luck", Cristiano Ronaldo concluded in his message.
It should be noted that Portugal trained at the Parken on Wednesday to adapt to the pitch without Cristiano Ronaldo. This was contrary to what Jorge Jesus had announced at the press conference just a few minutes earlier.
Portugal's current captain left the stadium, as he had in Malmö, and his private jet is heading to Copenhagen so he can leave the Portugal camp.
Ronaldo has been at the centre of a controversy that began with Portugal's victory over Norway last Sunday. The captain was named among the substitutes, and Jorge Jesus ultimately did not bring him on, prompting him to show his frustration by heading straight to the dressing room after the match.
The situation led Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), to make an emergency trip to Denmark to ease tensions. It was reported this morning that the manager and Ronaldo had held a positive meeting.
Meanwhile, Portugal are preparing to face Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday. Portugal lead Group A4 with six points, three more than Norway and Denmark.
