NHL round-up: Capitals continue good form, Oilers make it five straight wins

The Washington Capitals extended their winning streak to four on Saturday proving why they're the best team in the Eastern Conference while the Edmonton Oilers extended their streak to a league-best five games.

The Caps beat the Sabres 4-2 on Saturday, improving to an Eastern Conference-best 21-6-2 record. Tom Wilson (13) scored two goals for Washington while Dylan Strome (10) and Jakob Chychrun (9) scored the go-ahead goals in the third period to seal the win. 

Washington now holds the best goal differential (+38) in the league, followed by Winnipeg (+36), and are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.

The Edmonton Oilers are the only team that remains hotter than the Caps right now after a 6-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Five straight goals were scored by five different Oilers before Vegas found themselves on the scoreboard late in the second period. 

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (6), Zach Hyman (8), Connor Brown (5), Leon Draisaitl (22), and Corey Perry (6), scored for the Oilers before Jeff Skinner (6) sealed the deal in the third period. Edmonton improves to 18-10-2 on the season and are now third in the Pacific division. 

Jets 4-2 Canadiens

Over in Winnipeg, the Jets secured a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. The Jets took a 3-1 lead with goals by Gabriel Vilardi (13), Adam Lowry (8), and Kyle Connor (17) before Vladislav Namestnikov (8) hit the empty net in the third period to put Montreal to bed.

The win now puts the Jets atop the Western Conference with a 22-9-1 record.

Senator 3-2 Penguins

Senators got the job done in overtime against the Penguins to extend their win streak to three games. Ottawa has now won seven of their last 10 games are steadily climbing the Atlantic division standings. 

After the Penguins tied it up 2-2 in the third period to send it to OT, Senators' star player Brady Tkachuk hit the exciting game-winner, making it his 15th goal on the season.

Around the league

Matt Duchene (13) scored the game-winning goal for the Dallas Stars in their 2-1 overtime victory over the St. Louis Blues. Meanwhile, Alex Killorn (6) also drilled home a game-winning goal for the Anaheim Ducks in their 4-3 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

 Jeff Petry (2) scored his first two goals of the season for the Detroit Red Wings in their 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Minnesota Wild hold second place in the Central division behind Kirill Kaprizov's (20) two goals in their 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Los Angeles Kings continue to be a consistent threat in the west after beating the New York Rangers 5-1 thanks to five straight goals. And the New Jersey Devils are on the Capitals' heels in the Metro division after besting the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.
