The National Hockey League's (NHL) nine-game slate on Thursday provided a ton of excitement on Thursday night as Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jake Guentzel eared his seventh career hat-trick while their Florida counterparts in the Panthers extended their winning streak.

Jake Guentzel (32) was the star of the night, helping the Lightning to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Buffalo Sabres. The veteran forward scored all three of his goals in the second period, with his final during a power play.

Eventually, newly acquired forward Oliver Bjorkstrand (17) scored the go-ahead goal in the third period finally sealing the deal.

Tampa Bay (37-21-4) has now won 10 of their last 11 games while the Sabres (24-31-6) dropped their fifth in a row, sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Panthers 3-0 Blue Jackets

The Panthers extend their win streak to an NHL-best five games.

Two power-play goals from Sam Reinhart (32) and Mackie Samoskevich (11) were topped off by an empty netter from Aleksander Barkov (17) to earn the team's second shutout win in the past three games.

Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky earned his fourth shutout of the year after the Bue Jackets only managed to get off 16 shots on goal.

Oilers 3-2 Canadiens

The Oilers ended the Canadiens' five-game win streak after Evan Bouchard (11) scored the game-winner in overtime with assists by, of course, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.

But Montreal is still hanging on in the Wild Card after earning the point. Edmonton had lost five of their last six since the NHL returned to action after the 4 Nations Face-Off but have now won two of their last three.

Stars 3-2 Flames

Dallas is starting to sneak up on the division-leading Winnipeg Jets after earning their fourth straight win thanks to an overtime win courtesy of Jason Robertson's (27) two goals.

Calgary has now lost four of their last five but still remain one point ahead of the Vancouver Canucks to maintain the second Wild Card spot.

Around the league

The Nashville Predators have now won back-to-back games after beating the Seattle Kraken 5-3 on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Jets bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. However, Flyers standout Matvei Michkov became the first rookie player to reach 20 goals this season.

Karel Vejmelka made a whopping 38 saves in the Utah Hockey Club's 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wing while the Carolina Hurricanes down the Boston Bruins 3-2 to extend their win streak to three games.
