Calgary Flames 3-4 Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings made things much more difficult than it had to be in their game against the Calgary Flames. Leading 4-0 in Alberta, the Wings nearly gave it away, ultimately holding on for a 4-3 win.
Both of the guests' goals in the opening frame came in the opening five minutes. Alex DeBrincat got the game's opening goal 62 seconds in, before Axel Sandin-Pellikka doubled the advantage three and a half minutes later. Although they outshot their opponents 14-10, the Flames failed to find the back of the net.
The Red Wings, who now lead the Atlantic Division, scored another quick-fire double in the second period. DeBrincat again got the scoring going, before Dylan Larkin made it 4-0.
Calgary finally found the back of the net in the last period as they tried to stage a late comeback. Joel Farabee's penalty goal gave them hope, before Matt Coronato added a second moments later. Mackenzie Weegar reduced the deficit to one with 5:20 left in the game, but that was the closest the hosts got.
The Red Wings have now won their last three games, all in regulation time, to propel themselves to fourth in the Eastern Conference. At the same time, the Flames saw their three-game streak come to an end.
Utah Mammoth 3-4 Florida Panthers
The defending Stanley Cup champions Florida Panthers topped the Utah Mammoth 4-3 on their travels. They did fall behind midway through the opening period to Dylan Guenther. However, Carter Verhaeghe ensured they did not go into the locker rooms behind, netting just before the period was up.
Florida then got a pair of goals from Sam Bennett less than two minutes apart to go up 3-1 early in the second. They barely had a chance to celebrate their two-goal cushion, as Guenther grabbed his second goal just a moment after the puck drop to make it 3-2.
Later on in the second frame, Jack McBain tied things up for the Mammoth, who went into the game off the back of consecutive losses. They were under the kosh for much of the game, with the Panthers outshooting them 64-42.
The game winner came 52 seconds before the end of regulation, when Anton Lundell tapped the puck over the goal line from less than a foot away.
The Panthers are now charging up the standings, with that being their third win on the spin. They have the most regulation wins of the 16 teams not currently in a playoff spot with 13. As for the Mammoth, they stay 10th in the West, just a point back of the top eight.
