The Florida Panthers will play in their third straight Stanley Cup, making them the fourth team since 1980 to do so, following their 5-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5.

It took a three-goal second period for the Panthers, who went into the night ahead 3-1 in the series, to come alive on the night.

Sebastian Aho had scored twice for the Hurricanes in the opening period as they went into the intermission up 2-0. It was just the second time in the series that Carolina went up by two goals.

Things took a turn in the second for the Canes as Florida found the back of the net three straight times in the space of four and a half minutes. First, Matthew Tkachuk converted on a power play to get them on the board.

Just thirty seconds later, Evan Rodrigues tied things up, his first of the playoffs, to give the Panthers all the momentum.

Anton Lundell then made it 3-2 with eight minutes left in the middle frame, and just like that, the Hurricanes were chasing the game - and the series.

It would take until the 8:30 mark of the third period to tie things up through Seth Jarvis, setting up a potential grandstand finish.

Unfortunately for the Carolina fans, they were left disappointed. Just as they have done in their previous four road games, the Panthers piled on the goals.

The winner came with 7:39 left, as Carter Verhaeghe scored his second of the series to put his side back in front.

This time, it was for good. Sam Bennett added an empty-netter at the end to secure the win for the Panthers, who won all three road games.

For the Hurricanes, this is the seventh year in a row they have won at least one playoff round but have failed to win their conference. Across the four major American sports, no other team has ever done that more than five years running.

Florida has now become the ninth different team to reach three straight Stanley Cup finals and will be in search of their second consecutive win.

They will meet the winner of the Western Conference, with the Edmonton Oilers leading the Dallas Stars 3-1 heading into Thursday's Game 5.
