Ice Hockey World Championship preview: Great Britain

The 2024 IIHF World Championship will soon begin in Czechia (the Czech Republic), set to get underway on May 10th.

Organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Prague and Ostrava will hold this year's tournament - which will run until May 26th.

Team GB are one of eight teams in Group A of the Championship (top division), alongside hosts Czechia, as well as Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Austria.

The US are in Group B, alongside Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, France, Kazakhstan and Poland.

Russia and Belarus were not allowed to enter following the invasion of Ukraine.

Key dates

Great Britain will begin their World Championship charge against title holders Canada on May 11th, before facing Finland 24 hours later.

Great Britain v Denmark - May 17th

Czechia v Great Britain - May 18th

Great Britain v Norway - May 20th

Austria v Great Britain - May 21st

Should Team GB finish inside the top four of their group's table, they will progress to the quarter-finals.

Whichever team finishes bottom will be relegated to Division I (Group A) for 2025.

In last year's World Championship, Great Britain finished top of Division I (Group A), winning all four of their matches, to return to the top level for 2024.
