As reported by the Daily Mail, Barton was in custody this morning after being arrested on suspicion of wounding following a fight at a golf club on Sunday night.
The Sun reports that a man was found suffering from injuries to his face and ribs and rushed to hospital for treatment.
Barton, alongside a 50-year-old man were arrested and reports suggest Barton may have been acting in self-defence.
Merseyside Police said in a statement: "We can confirm that two people have been arrested following reports of an assault in Huyton on Sunday, March 8th.
"At around 9pm, emergency services were called to Fairway to reports of a man having been assaulted near to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.
"The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of injuries to his face and ribs.
"A 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man have both been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding.
"They are both currently in custody where they will be questioned by detectives. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”
The Guardian reports that officers could also be seen checking neighbouring gardens and that sniffer dogs were also seen at the golf club. Officers were also at the scene on Tuesday morning, carrying out fingertip searches.
This is the latest incident for Barton after retirement from football, as the former midfielder has also been involved in criminal damage and communications offences.
