Just six points from six league games is their worst start since 1986/87, and with pressure mounting on and off the pitch, this trip to Leeds has the feel of a must-not-lose occasion.
Leeds, by contrast, are in far better spirits despite suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season against Arsenal last time out.

Daniel Farke's side were leading in London before being pegged back, and they'll take plenty of pride from a performance that would have kept them in the top four had they held on. They also sit above United in the table for the first time in this fixture since September 2002.
Home advantage should help, with Leeds unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games at Elland Road, and they beat United 2-1 at Old Trafford in April to end a ten-match winless run against them.
That said, United have avoided defeat in their last seven visits to Elland Road in all competitions, so Carrick's men won't lack for belief despite their struggles.

Leeds United vs Manchester United tips
• Both teams to score - 57/100 with Bet365
• Over 2.5 goals - 33/50 with Bet365

Both teams to score
United's problems this season have been at the back rather than the front. They've failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their first six league games for a second consecutive season, something not seen since the 1930s, so Leeds should fancy their chances of finding the net.
At the other end, United have had a league-high 125 shots and 205 touches in the opposition box this season, so they're creating more than enough chances to score.
With Leeds also able to call on Noah Okafor, who scored both goals in April's win at Old Trafford, BTTS at 57/100 with Bet365 looks a sensible selection.
Tip: Both teams to score @ 57/100
Bet explanation: This bet wins if both Leeds United and Manchester United score at least one goal in the match.
Over 2.5 goals
Goals look likely given United's attacking output and the need for them to get all three points on Sunday, with pressure on Carrick increasing.
Add in a United defence that hasn't kept a clean sheet and a Leeds side whose last six home wins include five by margins of two or more goals, and there's every reason to expect a lively contest.
Leeds have been resilient early in games, conceding just once before half-time this season, but the volume of chances United create and the uncertainty at the back at both ends makes Over 2.5 goals at 33/50 with Bet365 a sound way to back goals.
Bet explanation: This bet wins if there are three or more goals scored in total between Leeds United and Manchester United.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin to have 2+ shots on target
Calvert-Lewin is the focal point of Leeds' attack and is constantly involved in physical battles. He will fancy his chances against a leaky United defence. The Reds tend to allow crosses into the box, which should play into the hands of the aerially dominant English striker.
With Leeds expected to attack at home and United's backline under constant pressure, Calvert-Lewin should get opportunities to test the goalkeeper.
At 3/2 with Bet365, this is a bigger-priced option than the other two picks, but it offers good value given his role as Leeds' main striker.
Tip: Dominic Calvert-Lewin to have 2+ shots on target @ 3/2
Bet explanation: This bet wins if Dominic Calvert-Lewin registers two or more shots on target during the match.
