El Azizi, who played for Club Athlétique de Tanger in the regional championship, got into difficulty while trying to cross the maritime border and died before she could reach the shore or be rescued, Tangier-based news outlet Tanja 24 reported.
She came from a family with close ties to local football and was a cousin of Abdessamad El Azizi, who has played for several clubs in the region, including Ittihad Martil.
Her death came during a large-scale attempt by migrants to reach Ceuta from Morocco on Thursday. Many of those who set out from Fnideq were reportedly driven by economic hardship and encouraged by appeals circulating on social media.
The crossings resulted in a heavy loss of life, with reports of as many as 57 deaths.
Moroccan authorities have since increased patrols and continued to intercept people attempting to make the journey. According to figures attributed to the Spanish interior ministry, about 25,000 people who crossed the border were returned to Morocco on Friday.
Local authorities estimated that more than 60,000 people either attempted or succeeded in swimming from the Fnideq coast -- roughly a 5km journey -- during the surge in crossings.
