In a day of World Cup football that included Saudi Arabia beating Argentina and Guillermo Ochoa denying a Robert Lewandowski spot-kick, it was difficult to choose one stand-out star.

But France's Olivier Giroud is our 'player of the day' for November 22nd.

It's hard to look beyond the AC Milan striker, who bagged a brace in the 4-1 win over Australia to become his nation's joint-top goalscorer in history.

Giroud now has a staggering 51 international goals to his name for France, the same number as Thierry Henry.

The Milan striker's brace was a hugely welcome boost for Les Bleus, after losing a plethora of talented players - including talisman Karim Benzema - to injuries.

In terms of injuries, the reigning champions are one of the biggest hit nations at the World Cup.

Both Benzema and Christopher Nkunku - another star lost to injury - would arguably have started ahead of Giroud for France, but the 36-year-old stepped up in their opener.

Following on from Denmark's stalemate with Tunisia, Les Bleus now top Group D and are next up against the Danes this weekend.

It would be remiss of this writer to not mention Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari, the goalscorers in Saudi Arabia's 2-1 win over Lionel Messi's Argentina - a result that shook world football.

But Giroud has often played second fiddle and he's delivered yet again on the biggest stage.
