The Scottish Premiership is full of intrigue, and this week was no exception. Ste Carson breaks down the latest talking points in Flashscore UK’s regular snapshot of the action.

Old Firm stalemate

While a stalemate is never the showpiece Scottish football hopes for, Rangers' 0-0 draw with Celtic at Ibrox keeps the title race alive.

The Celts find themselves at the top of the tree, level on points with Hearts, with three wins and a draw, evidence of a steady start.

Rangers, though, remain winless, languishing in seventh on four points, piling the pressure on manager Martin Russell.

A six-point gap isn't unassailable, but it's a mega head start they've gifted their oldest rivals ahead of the international break.

Rangers' trip to Hearts on 13 September already looks pivotal, with Martin desperate to kickstart his side's campaign - albeit a month late.

Celtic, meanwhile, will head to Kilmarnock aiming to extend their lead over Rangers - or maybe I should say Hearts?

Hearts keep ticking

A hard-fought 2-1 win at Livingston kept Hearts on pace with Celtic, who lead the Premiership on goal difference.

As was argued in last fortnight's round-up, the Jam Tarts could be eyeing a top-two finish, given the sluggish start Rangers have had.

There is plenty of football ahead, of course, but if Hearts keep up their momentum, a rare opportunity could present itself.

Hearts' match against Rangers after the break will offer another measure of success as victory at home would set Derek McInnes' side up nicely.

Hibernian, five points back but with a game in hand, are closest to Hearts in third. For now, though, the Jam Tarts can dream beyond consolidation.

Saints in trouble?

St Mirren are in a tough spot after the opening weeks, with a 1-1 draw against Hibs at least stopping the bleeding but underlining familiar failings.

The tenth-placed Saints are still looking for their first win of the season, and two goals in four outings (only rock-bottom Aberdeen have a worse record) reflect an attack short on conviction.

Up next is a meeting with Falkirk and a chance to restore some confidence against modest opposition.

Too early to make any big judgements, perhaps, but things need to change fast otherwise St Mirren risk being pulled into trouble before autumn has properly begun.
