Giuliano Simeone managed to score an 85th-minute equaliser for 10-man Atletico as they managed to earn a point at the Metropolitano.
One of the biggest talking points of the game, however, was the reintroduction on Alvarez, 26, who has spent the summer angling for a move to Barcelona.
Unsurprisingly, Alvarez was met with a chorus of boos from the home fans as he was brought on for the final 24 minutes of the game.
After the game, footage emerged of Alvarez heading straight down the tunnel as his teammates went over to greet the fans.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Simeone has confirmed that the decision was made by the club rather than the player.
"People at the club told me that the club decided he shouldn't be near the stands and the fans," he said.
"The decision was made by the club to keep him away and separate him from the rest of the team, so he would come to the locker room instead."
