Ghana at the 2026 World Cup: A round of 32 exit after a promising start

The Black Stars were knocked out of the round of 32 stage of the 2026 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Colombia courtesy an early goal from Jhon Arias at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Friday.

The 2026 World Cup was 20 years since Ghana made their debut appearance at the competitoin in 2006. Despite qualifying for four World Cups since then, including the 2026 edition, Ghana had to wait 16 years to make the knockout stage of the Mundial again.

Their finest hour remains in 2010 in South Africa, when Asamoah Gyan's goals fired them all the way to the quarter-finals, where a Luis Suárez handball on the goal line and the resulting missed penalty denied them a place in the semi-finals in one of the most heartbreaking moments in tournament history.

Ghana's 2026 World Cup Schedule and Results

The Black Stars were drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. New coach Carlos Queiroz faced Panama in the first match and thanks to a late winning goal by Caleb Yirenkyi walked away with important three points.

The 2026 World Cup is taking place from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament features 48 national teams and is played at 16 modern stadiums.

In the next match, Ghana put up one of the best defensive performances of the tournament holding tournament favourites England to a goalless draw. 

The final group game was inconsequential as by then Ghana had already secured qualfication to the next round as they lost 2-1 to Croatia.

In the round of 32, Ghana conceded an early goal from Jhon Arias who tapped home at the far post from a Luis Suarez cross as Colombia proved too strong for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations winners.

Where did Ghana play their FIFA World Cup games?

Ghana's World Cup campaign opened on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada. The stadium, which is be known as Toronto Stadium throughout the tournament in line with FIFA's policy on corporate-sponsored names, has had its capacity expanded to 45,736 for the World Cup. This makes it the smallest venue in the tournament, though it remains the only soccer-specific stadium in the United States or Canada to be awarded host venue status. 

Ghana and England on June 23 was hosted at the Gillette Stadium, located in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in the greater Boston metropolitan area, hosts World Cup 2026 matches under the name of Boston Stadium. The stadium has a tournament capacity of approximately 65,000 for its seven matches.

Lincoln Financial Field, known as Philadelphia Stadium throughout the tournament, was Ghana’s final group game against Croatia. The stadium has a standard capacity of 67,594 and is the permanent home of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL. Lincoln Financial Field is located in South Philadelphia and welcomed a star-studded cast of nations across the tournament, including Brazil, France, and Ivory Coast. 

Ghana vs Colombia in the round of 32 was hosted at the Arrowhead Stadium, which is the home of Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). The stadium has undergone three rennovations and has been expanded twice currently has a 76,416 capacity and is located Missouri.

Ghana's FIFA World Cup knockouts schedule

After finishing third in Group L, Ghana secured qualification to the round of 32 finishing as one of the best third-placed teams. With eight best third-placed teams to qualify out of the 12 groups, Ghana's 4 points was enough.  

The third-placed team in Group L were drawn to face the winner of Group K, hence why Ghana faced Colombia who remain unbeaten in the competition.

The knockout stage runs from June 28 through to July 19, with the final taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
