Aston Villa manager Unai Emery responded to rumours striker Ollie Watkins refused to play in their 4-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

Villa got their 2026/27 Premier League campaign off to a nightmare start as Brighton scored four goals in 23 minutes to demolish Emery’s side.

To make matters worse, new signing Joao Gomes was shown a straight red card for violent conduct, meaning he will miss their next three Premier League games.

One of the biggest omissions from Emery’s side was striker Watkins, who is reportedly keen on a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, which has had two bids rejected.

Emery was unable to field an out-and-out striker, playing Emi Buendia in the number nine role with Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo out injured.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Emery was bullish in his response to rumours that Watkins refused to play in the defeat to Brighton.

"The question is for him, I can't answer. I can only answer with my silence," he said.

"I can't explain - he can."

Villa have already lost several key players this summer, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Ezri Konsa all moving on.
