Valentin Vacherot's road to Shanghai gets tougher with resurgent Stefanos Tsitsipas standing in his way

Match News and Form

Valentin Vacherot is arguably under the most pressure right now, considering the massive number of points he has to defend during this Asian swing, particularly the Shanghai Masters title he won last year and its significance to his current ranking. He is therefore under immense pressure to find some form and build momentum in Tokyo before heading to Shanghai. He gave himself a much-needed boost with a crucial win over the in-form Alexander Blockx, securing a tightly contested 7-6, 7-6 victory.

Every win is extremely important for Vacherot as he looks to rebuild his confidence and physical conditioning. The last few months have been difficult, with fitness problems beginning to affect him, which is perhaps understandable given this is his first full season on the main tour and the physical demands of week-to-week competition. However, he cannot afford to let those issues affect him now, with so many points at stake in Shanghai. Making the most of his opportunity in Tokyo would significantly ease the pressure on his shoulders, particularly as he has no points to defend here after not competing at this stage last year.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was going through a difficult period earlier this year, with both his ranking and confidence taking a major hit and his position edging closer to a potential exit from the Top 100. However, he has produced an excellent recovery from that position, starting with his title at ATP Gstaad and followed by a second-week appearance at the US Open, which was also his best-ever result in New York. Tsitsipas has continued that impressive turnaround in Tokyo, winning three matches in a row as a qualifier to reach the second round and extend his current winning streak to five matches.

Head to Head: 0-0

This will be their first meeting.

Stats and Facts

Vacherot has not won back-to-back matches at an ATP event since Monte Carlo in April.

He is seeking the seventh tour-level quarterfinal appearance of his career and his fifth of the 2026 season.

Tsitsipas is a former quarterfinalist in Tokyo, having reached that stage in 2018.

Tsitsipas has won six of his 14 matches against Top 20 players this year.

Betting Analysis

Vacherot will be ready to give everything he has got during this Asian swing, with the stakes extremely high for him. However, whether his body will support him and allow him to maintain his level remains to be seen, as there are still significant doubts over his fitness. His physical condition has been unreliable in recent months and was also not entirely convincing during his opening-round victory this week.

Tsitsipas, meanwhile, is trending upwards and gradually rebuilding his form and confidence. His experience at this level should give him enough of an edge to take advantage of the situation and secure a Top 20 victory.
