World champion Michael Smith has won Players Championship 13 in Hildesheim on Monday night, defeating Scot Gary Anderson 8-7 in the final. It was the last chance for preparation before the World Cup of Darts begins on Thursday.

Smith played in the semi-final against the surprise of the tournament Connor Scutt, who sits 81st in the world rankings.

Scutt beat European champion Ross Smith 6-1 and Irish talent Keane Barry 6-0 on his way to the last four - players much higher in the world rankings. Mike De Decker also had to make do and was sent home 6-0.

However, the world number one proved a size too big for the Englishman, losing 7-3 to compatriot Michael Smith.

Smith's teammate at the World Cup of Darts, Rob Cross, didn't fare so well, however. Cross lost in the first round to Christian Perez, who is competing for the Philippines in the unofficial World Cup for countries.

Anderson's teammate Peter Wright went down 6-0 in the second round against Stephen Burton, the world number 128. Welshman Gerwyn Price lost in the quarter-finals to Australian Damon Heta, who in turn was eliminated by Anderson.

Heta's teammate, Simon Whitlock, lost to Dutchman Kevin Doets in the first round. Danny Noppert did not progress beyond the third round, in which he lost to James Wade. Dirk van Duijvenbode lost to Lee Evans one round earlier.

Jonny Clayton and Michael van Gerwen were conspicuous by their absence, while Raymond van Barneveld lost 6-1 to Anderson in the last 16.
