Diego Simeone’s men will hope to fare better against English opposition on this occasion, after losing to Liverpool in the first matchweek of the Champions League for the second consecutive season.
After netting a brace at Anfield last year, Marcos Llorente put his team ahead with a well-taken finish early on. However, goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Dominik Szoboszlai five minutes either side of half-time ensured the hosts claimed all three points.
Although their continental campaign commenced on a negative note, Atleti are progressing extremely well on the domestic front. Following their opening eight fixtures, Los Colchoneros are still within touching distance of reigning champions Barcelona at the summit of the LaLiga table.

In stark contrast, Manchester United are currently miles behind Premier League leaders Manchester City following a typically inconsistent start. The Red Devils lost two of their opening six league encounters, including a sobering 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City.
However, a convincing 4-0 victory over Champions League debutants Sabah will have undoubtedly pleased Michael Carrick, who is currently experiencing the toughest period of his early tenure in the Old Trafford hot seat.
Tuesday night’s contest in the Spanish capital will be screened exclusively live on Amazon Prime, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 (BST).

Atletico Madrid team news
Atletico Madrid came through the international break almost completely unscathed, although several players did pick up minor issues.
Marc Pubill felt mild discomfort in his foot during training but still managed to start three of Spain’s four Nations League fixtures, while international teammate Alejandro Grimaldo prematurely left Luis de la Fuente’s squad. The experienced full-back strained his thigh while warming up for the clash with Croatia, resulting in him returning to Madrid early.
There was also some concern surrounding the condition of Lee Kang-in, who didn’t return for the second half of South Korea’s meeting with Uzbekistan due to an ankle complaint. However, the versatile playmaker later confirmed that this was a pre-existing injury that wasn’t serious, with a schedule of three matches in the space of nine days perhaps being a contributing factor to its re-emergence.
The three-week pause on club football has also been beneficial in some respects, as discovered perhaps most acutely by under-fire striker Julián Alvarez. The subject of intense transfer speculation over the summer, Alvarez was eager to broker a move to LaLiga rivals Barcelona. With no agreement in place, the Argentinian cited illness as a dubious reason for a brief spell of absence.
However, the spotlight is no longer focused on a saga that caused major disruption at the Metropolitano, enabling Diego Simeone to properly reintegrate his star striker into Atléti’s starting XI.
Pablo Barrios has also profited from this downtime, as the influential midfielder has now pretty much recovered from the muscle injury he sustained at Anfield on matchday one.

Manchester United team news
Michael Carrick is unable to call upon the services of a handful of first-team players, but Manchester United’s treatment room is at least slowly beginning to clear.
Matthijs de Ligt has been struggling with a back problem for the best part of a year, but is now almost back to full fitness. The Dutch central defender hadn’t played a single minute of football before last week’s bounce match against Swiss side Lausanne-Sport, which was staged at United’s Carrington training complex.
The behind-closed-doors friendly also enabled Carlos Baleba to receive his first taste of game time since leaving Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer, after watching his teammates from the bench at Craven Cottage.
Marcus Rashford was unable to last the duration in West London, due to an awkward landing caused by a touchline collision. That forced the versatile attacker to remove himself from the England squad alongside club teammate Kobbie Mainoo, who didn’t provide an official reason for his withdrawal.
A recurrence of the shin injury he sustained at the end of last season prevented Benjamin Šeško from representing Slovenia over the past few weeks, while Patrick Dorgu also appears to have aggravated a previous ailment. The 21-year-old wing-back was substituted just 30 minutes into Denmark’s 2-0 triumph over Wales, having pulled the same hamstring that recently kept him sidelined for roughly three months.
Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes missed Portugal’s trip to Norway midway through the international break, but this absence was more to do with load management than anything else.
Goalkeeping duo Tom Heaton and Karl Darlow are both nursing issues, but the latter is fit enough to be included in Carrick’s matchday squad. After hurting his ankle in a routine training session at the end of August, Amad Diallo is also now available.

Where to watch on TV or live stream?
Although TNT Sports is the main home of UEFA competitions in the United Kingdom, Amazon Prime can select any one of Tuesday’s Champions League fixtures to show live. This agreement will stay in place when Paramount assumes broadcasting rights ahead of the 2027/28 campaign, in a contract that will run for the following four years.
Amazon’s coverage of Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United starts at 18:55 (BST), over an hour before the action gets underway. Gabby Logan anchors a studio panel consisting of Clarence Seedorf, Wayne Rooney, and Ashley Young, while Jon Champion and Alan Shearer will describe events at the Metropolitano.
Head-to-head record
Despite only winning two of their last 15 encounters with English opposition in European competition, Atletico Madrid have never lost against Manchester United.
Tuesday’s opponents have played each other four times across two continental ties, the first of these coming in the second round of the 1991/92 Cup Winners’ Cup. On that occasion, the Spaniards won 4-1 on aggregate following a comfortable win at the Estadio Vicente Calderón and a 1-1 draw in the return fixture.
The most recent meeting between these two sides occurred during the 2021/22 Champions League campaign, when the pair were drawn against each other at the Round of 16 stage. After Anthony Elanga cancelled out João Félix’s opener in the first leg, Renan Lodi’s first-half strike at Old Trafford was enough to secure Atleti’s safe passage to the quarter-finals.
Since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Manchester United have only twice started a Champions League campaign with back-to-back victories. José Mourinho achieved this at the beginning of the 2017/18 season before Ole Gunnar Solskjær replicated the feat three years later – will Michael Carrick be the next to add his name to this rather short list of managers?
