Ryan Gravenberch’s red card on the hour mark against Manchester City on Sunday all but killed the game as a contest.

Up until then, Liverpool were well in the match and competing on an equal footing with one of the continent’s most enterprising teams.

So although Andoni Iraola’s early Liverpool career has been a mixed bag, the Spaniard at least masterminded an excellent 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first round of Champions League games in September.

The Reds were outstanding on the day and almost completely shackled their dangerous opponents, proving that they remain a force in Europe at Anfield.

But can they replicate that performance in Austria? LASK lost their Champions League opener to AEK Athens, which perhaps sums up their level right now, but there are few easy games in the UCL… something Liverpool will be minded to remember at the Raiffeisen Arena.

Backing a Bit of Bouncebackability

It’s hard to shake the feeling that Liverpool are the stronger of the two sides and should win this game.

LASK may be the reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions and they do remain strong domestically, but they have rarely shown an aptitude for stepping up to continental level – as evidenced by their 0-1 defeat in Athens, in which they were absolutely played off the park.

They ended last season having conceded an average of greater than a goal per game, while they have shipped nine in eight games this time around.

Liverpool’s attacking aspirations will partly be governed by the fitness of the likes of Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, with the latter’s likely absence a pain for him and Iraola.

But there’s strength in depth to this Liverpool squad now courtesy of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz, so we fully expect their greater quality to prevail in this contest. Barcola, for example, has had two shots on target in each of his last three Champions League starts.

At match odds of around 1/4, the bookies are convinced Liverpool will win this game… and we’re inclined to agree with them.

But this goals range selection offers better value than simply backing the Reds outright – given the absence of key attacking personnel, it seems unlikely they will notch more than three times in Austria.

Tip: Liverpool Goals Range: 1-3 @ 1/2 (Bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Liverpool score one, two or three goals in this game.

Low(er) Expectations

The bookies are modelling goals in this game, with four or more goals trading at odds-on prices.

But you wonder if that will prove to be the case. Liverpool are solid enough, keeping City at bay for an hour of Sunday’s game, with additions like Ronald Araujo and Jeremy Jacquet offering much-needed solidity.

However, in an attacking sense, Liverpool are hurt considerably by the absence of Swedish striker Isak and Dutchman Gakpo, who was in fine form before injury struck. If that duo is missing on Wednesday, it places a ceiling on what the Reds can deliver in front of goal.

Tip: Match Goals Range: 1-4 @ 1/2 (Bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if there are between one and four goals in this game.

Possession Procession

Iraola has, tactically, made some subtle changes to the Liverpool of Arne Slot.

They seem to be retaining possession better, which in turn enables them to control games – forcing their opponents to chase shadows.

In addition, the Reds have natural ball carriers now in Barcola, Munoz and exciting youngster Rio Ngumoha, who in turn are viable candidates to be fouled on a regular basis.

We expect Liverpool to draw plenty more fouls from LASK amid their dominance of the ball. possession to their technically more proficient opponents on Wednesday, and the Austrians won’t mind getting stuck in – they conceded 15 fouls against AEK Athens as frustrations rose.

As such, we expect Liverpool to draw plenty more fouls from LASK in amidst their dominance of the ball.

Tip: Liverpool Over 12.5 Free Kicks @ 4/7 (Bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Liverpool earn 13 or more free kicks in total.
