Bayern Munich are as good as through to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-finals after securing a 6-1 round of 16 first-leg victory over Atalanta. inflicting a seventh defeat in eight UCL knockout matches on the Italian side.

Bayern have been a nigh on unstoppable force domestically, and the Bavarian outfit were no different in Bergamo.

Vincent Kompany’s charges started on the offensive and reaped the rewards of their early pressure when a cleverly-worked corner resulted in Serge Gnabry working a yard inside the area and firing the ball across the six-yard line for Josip Stanisic to tap home.

Die Roten continued to dominate, and they duly doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Michael Olise stepped in off the right and arrowed a left-footed effort into the far corner.

Atalanta were crumbling under Bayern's pressure and soon found themselves three goals behind. Olise was again heavily involved, threading a perfect ball through for Gnabry, who strode towards goal and finished with aplomb to leave the Italian side on the brink.

In truth, the 3-0 half-time scoreline flattered Atalanta, who ought to have gone into the break further adrift as Nicolas Jackson was denied by a Marco Carnesecchi stop. Then, as the interval beckoned, Gnabry curled an effort against the top of the bar to underline the visitors’ superiority.

Nevertheless, the record German champions soon had their fourth goal less than 10 minutes into the second period, breaking at pace from an Atalanta free-kick before Jackson applied the finishing touch to a sweeping move.

Chances continued to come for the visitors, and La Dea initially had Carnesecchi to thank for keeping the scoreline at least half-respectable, with the shot-stopper quick off his line to prevent Olise adding a fifth.

That was nothing more than a temporary reprieve for the hosts, though, and they were soon picking the ball out of the back of the net once more courtesy of another trademark Olise finish.

Jamal Musiala was next to get himself on the scoresheet, bagging Bayern’s sixth midway through the second half by turning home Jackson’s cross from close range.

Dayot Upamecano almost got in on the act, too, when he saw his header crash back off the post, but that would have just been the cherry on top of Bayern’s already delicious cake - the only real blemish on the evening was a worrying-looking injury to Alphonso Davies.

The Bavarians have almost certainly booked their spot in the last eight, where they’ll face a blockbuster tie against either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

Atalanta, meanwhile, will require a miracle the likes of which we have never seen before in this competition to progress, even if they were able to grab a last-gasp consolation via Mario Pasalic- in other words, they can already start concentrating on their efforts to qualify for this tournament next term.
