Slavia Prague held Atalanta to a goalless draw in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) – just the second time they have avoided defeat in their 11 matches on Italian soil.

The teams were greeted by a tifo that read “light my fire”, and they both looked to provide an early spark with Tomáš Chory flashing the ball across goal before a Davide Zappacosta shot was blocked.

Atalanta then had a flurry of attempts without breaking through, as Nikola Krstović’s shot was blocked, Jakub Markovic rushed out to deny Odilon Kossounou and tipped Charles De Ketelaere’s fizzing strike wide, before Tomáš Vlček made a brave block.

Slavia still looked to create problems, but Atalanta remained the more menacing side as half-time drew nearer. Krstović was left in disbelief after failing to convert two big opportunities, as Markovic scrambled across his goal to prevent the first attempt before the striker blazed the second over.

Ademola Lookman then saw two strikes deflected behind by Vlček, while De Ketelaere and Ederson curled a shot apiece wide.

However, with David Moses seeing his shot tipped behind by Marco Carnesecchi late in the first half, Slavia had something to build on as the half-time whistle blew. And they nearly did early in the second half, when Lukáš Provod forced Carnesecchi into palming away a threatening free-kick.

They were visibly confident with Vasil Kušej hitting an ambitious volley marginally wide, but there was a blow as Youssoupha Mbodji was forced off by an injury on the hour mark.

Ivan Juric voluntarily turned to his bench at the same time, but Kamaldeen Sulemana couldn’t get the goal La Dea craved as he overran the ball after racing behind and allowed Markovic to smother him before seeing a shot blocked by Vicek.

Provod’s deflected strike at the other end was held, and Michal Sadilek fired agonisingly over the crossbar, but De Ketelaere still posed an increasingly frustrated figure.

La Dea piled on the late pressure, but Gianluca Scamacca headed over from a golden opportunity and had a venomous strike palmed behind by Markovic, as both teams recorded their third consecutive draw across all competitions.

This was also Slavia Prague’s second draw from their three UCL matches, while Atalanta boast a slightly better European record as they sit on four points.
