The 2026/27 Championship season got underway over the weekend with 24 clubs setting their stall out for the next nine months - which means Flashscore's Championship round-up is also back!

The opening weekend saw plenty of shock results and very few teams really blew their opponents away, with several tight fixtures and narrow victories.

Watford's 2-1 win against Southampton was undoubtedly one of the bigger surprises, as was Blackburn's 2-2 draw at title hopefuls Wolves.

We also saw Burnley spoil West Ham's opening-day party, with the Clarets coming from two goals down to draw in the dying moments of the match.

Elsewhere, Cardiff rescued a draw against Wrexham with the last kick of the game and Middlesbrough came from behind to start their season with a win against Lincoln.

Burnley snatch draw from West Ham

Many supporters will be backing West Ham for an immediate return to the Premier League due to largely retaining their top players, while the same would also question Burnley's chances after they sold almost all of their top stars.

Sunday's match was a timely reminder that anything can happen in the Championship, though, as the Hammers squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with their fellow relegated side.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side weathered an early onslaught from the hosts before Max Kilman gave them the lead against the run of play.

They went on to largely dominate the rest of the first half, but Burnley took control again in the second period - only for the visitors to once again score against the run of play as Manor Solomon netted on his debut.

It looked like a hard-fought opening win for West Ham up until the 83rd minute, when left-back Oliver Scarles gave away a cheap foul in the box and handed Burnley a lifeline.

Zian Flemming - one of the only top players to stay at Turf Moor so far - calmly slotted home. He then proved his value once more just 10 minutes later, reacting quickest in the box to stab an effort into the bottom corner and rescue a point for his side.

The match was a great showcase of two teams that will be competing at the top end of the Championship - and perhaps a big indicator to West Ham that they will need more depth in the squad if they are to storm the division in the way many are expecting.

Flemming also deserves a mention. The striker has been linked with a move away all summer, but Burnley will boost their promotion chances dramatically if they can keep him at the club.

Watford shock the Saints

Another side tipped for promotion is Southampton, despite starting the season on minus four points following the Spygate scandal from last term.

The Saints began their campaign away at Watford - a tricky place to go, but a match they would expect to be winning if they were to realise their aims of finishing in the top two.

The Hornets had no intention of giving Tonda Eckert's side an easy ride, though, grabbing an early lead through debutant Iker Bravo.

Amin Nabizada doubled their advantage later in the first half with a stunning solo strike, running from his own half and firing into the bottom corner.

Southampton bounced back from their slow start and got back into the game through Cyle Larin, but didn't have enough to break down an impressive Watford side.

It's a disappointing result for the Saints, but not one that will likely trouble them too much in the long run. They have so far kept hold of the key players that put them on a 19-game unbeaten run at the end of last season - although it remains to be seen how much of that was down to the spying antics put in place by Eckert.

Watford have had their doubters over the summer, but their squad is full of impressive young players and they proved they can cope with one of the better sides in the division - the Hornets could be one to keep an eye on for a play-off push.

Middlesbrough start well

One of Middlesbrough's big issues last season under Kim Hellberg was the way in which they dominated the ball, created chance after chance, but always failed to turn their control into goals.

A busy summer transfer window has seen them address several issues in the squad - primarily upgrading their goalkeeper several levels with the signing of Radek Vitek, and bringing in goal-scoring striker Will Lankshear.

It was Lankshear who proved to be the difference in the Teesiders' 2-1 win over Lincoln; the 21-year-old scored twice from close range to ensure his side came away with all three points.

Lankshear was brought to the club to help convert their dominance into goals and we got the first taste of it on Saturday afternoon.

Middlesbrough ended the match with 76 per cent possession, 23 shots with seven on target and five big chances created.

Last season, that would have been a game they drew or even lost.

There's still a long way to go, but Saturday's result is a good indicator that Boro have addressed the issues that plagued them last season.

Colwill rescues Cardiff

Cardiff hosted Welsh rivals Wrexham on Monday night in their first game back in the Championship following promotion from League One.

Their return got off to a disastrous start, with Kieffer Moore finding the net after just three minutes to give the visitors the lead.

Things looked bleak for the Bluebirds, who were knocking on the door without much success right until virtually the final kick of the game.

Cardiff earned a free-kick on the edge of the area in the 98th minute, with academy graduate Rubin Colwill firing a superb effort into the top corner.

Coburn stands out for Millwall

Each week, Flashscore will use our player ratings system to name both a Player and Team of the Week - and the winner for the 26/27 curtain-raiser is Millwall striker Josh Coburn.

The striker netted both of the goals in his side's 2-0 win over Bristol City to earn a 9.3 Flashscore rating, the highest of anyone in the Championship over the weekend.
