Is Camavinga a viable solution at left-back for France?

Eduardo Camavinga came on for Real Madrid team-mate Aurélien Tchouaméni with 15 minutes remaining in France's match against the Netherlands, and played in his usual position in midfield.

But Didier Deschamps had said earlier that the former Rennes man would be the replacement for Theo Hernandez.

It's a good thing he's left-footed, and he's played as a left-back under Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid (a total of seven times), but it's not Camavinga's natural position - nor is it where he can make the most of his qualities.

It's true that modern full-backs can turn into real playmakers, comfortable on the ball, but Camavinga's area of influence is in the heart of the pitch. His last few outings with Madrid have definitely proved that.

Performances with Real Madrid

Against Liverpool he was good in both the first and second legs, but especially so at the Santiago Bernabeu. During 90 minutes, he gave the impression of being equal to the level displayed by Toni Kroos. The two play more or less in the same role, but the advantage of the Frenchman is his influence off the ball.

Camavinga perfectly represents the profile of the modern midfielder, a player who can really shine in the modern game. And when he has the ball at his feet, he becomes more and more important for Real Madrid when in possession. This was also evident in the last Clasico, during which he was one of his team's outstanding performers.

And more generally, since the beginning of the year, the 20-year-old has progressed a lot. He is more mature, evidently, more serene and more concentrated during matches. This is a logical observation for a player who benefits from an idyllic environment in the Spanish capital, as he is surrounded by great players.

For France, this is great news - his profile could prove to be a great resource for Didier Deschamps.

An alternative in France's midfield

Despite the fact that he did not have the time or the real opportunity to show off against the Netherlands, Camavinga was used as a midfielder by his coach, a sign that nothing is set in stone. However, Deschamps had said that he had called up the Cabinda native to use him as a left-back.

Theo Hernandez has been a key figure in the team's development, but it is clear that he is unlikely to play many minutes in that position... and that's good for him - because if we look at the "competition" in midfield, Camavinga has a real added value to bring.

There is some uncertainty in midfield. The last two 'rising stars', if you like, Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni, have shown great promise under Deschamps, but don't have the same offensive contribution as Camavinga.

The former Rennes man is capable of doing more with the ball in front of him. He is more creative, a better dribbler, has better vision and has that explosive profile so crucial in 2023. He can be a great launching pad, through the pass, for Kylian Mbappé or Randal Kolo Muani, similar to what he does at club level for Vinicius Jr.

The argument isn't that Camavinga deserves to be an indispensable member of Les Bleus' midfield, on the other hand, he has the potential to become one in the medium and long-term.

But above all, he is displaying real reasons to believe in him, given his recent performances for Real Madrid. An answer may come this Monday in Ireland.
