Maccabi had entered the clash in need of three points, and on the back of consecutive draws in the competition, they once again looked short of ideas during a goalless first half.
Valdemar Byskov and Denil Castillo both threatened for Midtjylland, which made it no surprise when the Danish side eventually took the lead on the brink of HT. Franculino Djú the man providing the goal, with the impressive 21-year-old firing the ball into the top corner from inside the penalty box.
The domination from the away side continued into the second half, with Philip Billing testing his luck with a right-footed effort, but a charging block denied the ex-Bournemouth man.
Darío Osorio saw a shot saved by Roi Mishpati, while Victor Bak Jensen ought to have done better with a sighter when bearing down on goal. All of the momentum was with Midtjylland and they were rewarded for their dominance midway through the second half when they netted a second.
It was the ever-dangerous Billing who was in the right place at the right time to convert Martin Erlic’s knockdown from a corner to give Midtjylland breathing room.
Any hopes of a Maccabi comeback were squashed six minutes from the end when Djú picked up his second of the evening, this time converting Simsir’s cutback from 12 yards out.
It’s a result that maintains Midtjylland’s perfect start to the UEL, with the four-time Danish champions sitting pretty at the top of the league phase table.
