Sundowns rise to the occasion
Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place at the Club World Cup as the second-best ranked eligible team from the CAF four-year ranking. It's the club's second appearance at this level, last involved at Japan 2016. The Sundowns suffered a 2-0 second-round defeat in Osaka to Kashima Antlers of Japan before stumbling to a 4-1 reverse against South Korean outfit Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Far from impressive.
Mamelodi travelled to the United States feeling they have unfinished business and a point to prove in the Club World Cup. They didn't cover themselves in glory nine years ago, and fans dreamt of watching their favourites perform much better at the second time of asking. They got their wish when the Memelodi Sundowns recorded a battling win over Ulsan HD on Wednesday.
The Sundowns met South Korean side Ulsan HD in Orlando and secured a vital 1-0 win, ensuring the best possible start. Lucas Ribeiro Costa set up teammate Iqraam Rayners for what proved to be the winning goal in the 36th minute. The South Africans dominated the football from there but were wasteful in the final third, costing them the security of a second goal. They'll be sharper here, and I fancy Mamelodi to score again.

BVB fail to impress
Followers of European football, and, in particular, the German Bundesliga, had high hopes for Borussia Dortmund this summer. The Black and Yellow finished fourth in the German top-tier last season, well below fans' expectations. They've already strengthened in the summer transfer window, and most pundits predicted they'd progress as winners of Group F.
Before watching their opponents bank a narrow win, Borussia Dortmund were held to a stuffy goalless draw at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, by Fluminense. The Brazilians more than held their own against the Germans and looked the most likely to score a winner. In the end, a draw seemed a decent result for a Dortmund side that was far from its best.
Having taken only a point from their opening game, Dortmund know the pressure is on. If they fail to beat the Sundowns, they'll risk becoming a big-name casualty of the group stages. BVB is capable of performing much better than they did against the Brazilians in midweek, but they must prove it by putting a win on the board.

Borussia Dortmund failed to secure a win in their opening game, but it was a case of one point gained rather than two dropped.
