Although it’s the most frequently contested fixture in Spanish top-flight history, the title has never previously been clinched in an El Clásico clash. However, that surprising statistic may just be about to change. Currently sitting eleven points clear of second-placed Real Madrid with just three matches to play following this weekend’s crucial meeting at the Camp Nou, Barça only need a draw to complete the job.

Despite being forced to flit between the Estadi Johan Cruyff and Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys during the season’s initial stages while renovation work on the Camp Nou continued, Hansi Flick’s men have remarkably won all 17 of their home La Liga fixtures this term. Furthermore, they’ve only lost twice on league duty since early November, suffering defeats to fellow northern-based outfits Real Sociedad and Espanyol by the same 2-1 scoreline.

After comfortably dispatching Espanyol in their last outing, Real Madrid are hoping to secure a second victory in Catalonia in the space of a week. Last Sunday’s 2-0 triumph at the RCDE Stadium was enough to keep their faint title hopes alive, but some Madridistas wanted their side to lose rather than face the prospect of conceding the title behind enemy lines.

It’s been a harrowing 2026 for Los Blancos, who are now guaranteed to conclude the season trophyless for just the fifth time this century. A 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in January’s Spanish Super Cup final was quickly followed by a humiliating Copa del Rey exit, as a newly-appointed Álvaro Arbeloa watched his side succumb to second-tier Albacete. By the middle of April, Madrid had been knocked out of the Champions League and were already struggling to keep pace with Barça in the title race.

This season’s third and final El Clásico will be screened exclusively live on Premier Sports, the United Kingdom’s main home of Spanish football.

Barcelona team news

Having torn his hamstring in the act of converting a penalty past Celta Vigo goalkeeper Ionuț Radu, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season.

Andreas Christensen is also out until the summer, after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament just before Christmas. With his current deal set to expire within the next two months, the Danish defender may well have played his last match for the club.

Those two players are joined in the treatment room by young defender Jofre Torrents, who sustained a serious ankle injury while featuring for the Blaugrana’s second-string outfit in February. The Spanish Under-19 international will be desperate to complete the final stages of his rehabilitation, given that Barça’s periphery squad members may receive additional game time once the title has been wrapped up.

Marc Bernal and Raphinha returned to the fold on Saturday evening following similar-length absences, although the latter watched his team defeat Osasuna without leaving the bench. Bernal was introduced as a late substitute after missing Barcelona’s previous five fixtures due to an ankle sprain, while Raphinha pulled his hamstring during the most recent international break.

Jules Koundé was suspended at the weekend thanks to picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign against Getafe, but is once again available for selection.

Real Madrid team news

Brazilian duo Rodrygo and Éder Militão have not only been ruled out for the rest of the campaign, but neither player will be fit enough to represent their country at this summer’s World Cup. There’s also doubt as to whether Arda Güler will be heading to North America, although it's currently assumed the Turkish midfielder should recover in time.

Álvaro Arbeloa is also without the services of Ferland Mendy, who developed a serious thigh problem during the early stages of Real Madrid’s 2-0 triumph over Espanyol. After only making nine first-team appearances throughout an injury-ravaged 2025/26 campaign, some concerning reports suggest this latest setback could impact the French full-back’s future career.

Kylian Mbappé enjoyed a social trip to Italy over the weekend despite currently being sidelined with a hamstring strain, resulting in him receiving criticism from fans and some quarters of the Spanish media. It remains unclear as to whether La Liga’s top scorer will be involved on Sunday evening.

An alleged training ground bust-up between Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde has also had a destabilising effect, although fall-outs appear to be a regular occurrence at Real Madrid's Valdebebas base.

Premier Sports are showing no less than three other LaLiga contests throughout Sunday, as the excitement builds ahead of El Clásico. Mallorca welcome Villarreal to the Son Moix and Athletic Club lock horns with Valencia in Bilbao, before rock-bottom Real Oviedo and European-chasing Getafe go toe-to-toe in the day’s evening kick-off.

Head-to-head record

There have been a colossal 263 meetings between these two Spanish giants, with Real Madrid enjoying a marginally superior record in this fixture. Los Blancos have won on 106 occasions to Barcelona’s 105, making a draw the least common result.

It’s one victory a piece this season, although Barça’s triumph – much like it would if they win at the weekend – directly resulted in the acquisition of silverware. Ronald Araújo hoisted the Spanish Super Cup aloft following an exhilarating El Clásico in Saudi Arabia, less than three months after Madrid defeated the Catalans in the pair’s opening league clash.

The 36-time La Liga champions haven’t won an away fixture against Barcelona since October 2023, when a brace from Jude Bellingham ensured the visitors claimed maximum points at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. You would have to go back a further six months to clock Real Madrid’s latest success at the Camp Nou, which was largely made possible by Karim Benzema’s stunning hat-trick in the second leg of a topsy-turvy Copa del Rey tie.
