The will of Rui Costa has been fulfilled. Benfica announced, this Friday, the renewal of the German coach until 2026.
In his first season in Portuguese football, Schmidt is having a season with stratospheric numbers. In 43 games he has only lost in regulation time on one occasion (35 wins and seven defeats).
His side leads the league, 10 points over rivals Porto. They will also compete in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Inter.
In his career, Schmidt had spells with Munster, Paderborn, Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Beijing Guoan and PSV.
He won the Austrian championship, the Chinese, Austrian and Dutch cups, as well as the Dutch Super Cup.
