Despite suffering an unexpected defeat to Leeds on Monday evening, Manchester United look to be on course for a Champions League place. Chelsea, meanwhile, are battling just to finish in the top six of the Premier League. Betting writer Richard Trenchard looks at who will take a huge step towards their goal on Saturday (20:00 BST).

After a bright beginning for Chelsea under new boss Liam Rosenior, the wheels have well and truly come off.

They’ve won just one of their last seven Premier League games, while losing four of their last five, and haven’t scored for more than 270 minutes of EPL football.

Add into the mix an 8-2 aggregate thrashing at the hands of PSG in the Champions League, and you can understand why some faint murmurings of discontent are growing louder by the week at Stamford Bridge.

After the tragicomedy that was Ruben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford, Manchester United are a team reborn under Carrick. They’ve won seven of their last 11 Premier League outings, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa all defeated in that span.

But will Saturday’s clash go the way of the formbook?

Surprise underdog

Based on the evidence already presented in this preview, it really is hard to understand why Chelsea have been made favourites for this clash.

Yes, they have home advantage, but that isn’t always a positive thing when your fans are just starting to get a little agitated with your results and performance levels.

Yes, Manchester United will be without Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo, but there’s still enough class among their ranks – particularly in an attacking sense – and form in the tank to suggest they’ll get a positive result on Saturday.

Tip: Man Utd Draw No Bet @ 5/4 (bet365)

Explanation: If Man Utd win, so does our bet. If they lose, so do we. If the game ends in a draw, our stake is returned.

Defensive dilemma

Even though we favour Man Utd in the match result market, that’s not so suggest there won’t be goals for both teams in this one.

The absence of Maguire and Martinez – both suspended – really does hurt United, while Mainoo’s injury is also an issue from a defensive perspective; he adds legs to a defensive midfield pivot with the classy, but immobile, Casemiro.

Chelsea aren’t in the best of goalscoring form, but the likes of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Estevao have what it takes to arrest that decline.

Tip: Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals @ 8/11 (bet365)

Explanation: For our bet to land, we need both teams to score plus a combined tally of three or more goals.

In the book

Casemiro has been booked in four of his last five games for club and country.

The Brazilian simply loves a foul and is no stranger to referee backchat either, with the combination of playing away from home on Saturday – and some tricky opponents in and around him – suggesting that run can continue.

We presume Cole Palmer will be his direct opponent in the number 10 role, with Pedro dropping short and Estevao driving inside from the right. That class could be enough to secure Casemiro yet another booking.

Tip: Casemiro to Be Booked @ 2/1 (bet365)

Explanation: We need Casimero to be shown the yellow card… simple as that.
