Everton have been forced to pay Burnley £40 million after a lengthy legal dispute.

As reported by The Athletic, Burnley had been seeking damages once Everton were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) during the 2021/22 season.

This was the season Burnley were relegated to the Championship, something that may not have happened if Everton were punished at the time.

Everton finished four points above Burnley to retain and were only handed a a six-point deduction for the breach in the 2023-24 campaign.

Now, after Everton’s lawyers were able to delay the case until after the start of the following campaign, the Toffees must now pay Burnley £40M as the club missed out on major TV and commercial opportunities.

Burnley finished just three points from safety in 18th place in the 2021/22 season and will now claim back the money the side lost out on in what is a huge boost ahead of the next season in the Championship.

The club will use such a large amount of money in the summer transfer window, as they seek to bounce straight back up to the Premier League next season.
