Sandro Tonali is set to leave Newcastle to sign for Tottenham in a deal worth up to £100 million, and has already spoken about his reasoning behind the move - despite it not yet being officially confirmed.

All that's missing now is the official announcement, but the future of Tonali is already set. The Italian midfielder is on his way to London, where he will undergo his medical and sign the contract that will tie him to Tottenham under Roberto De Zerbi.

The deal with Newcastle is set to be completed for up to £100m, a fee that will make Tonali the most expensive Italian player in history.

Before leaving, the midfielder spoke to Sky Sports about his feelings regarding the move, also explaining the influence the new Spurs manager had on his decision.

"It took a while. We had a sort of agreement with Newcastle; we spoke every day and we got it done.

"They wanted the best for me, we wanted the best deal for them. We parted on excellent terms, everyone is happy and I'm ready for this new adventure."

"Why Tottenham? De Zerbi played a big part in this, and after three years at Newcastle it was also a life and family decision.

"De Zerbi deserves a lot of credit, not just as someone from Brescia and a friend, but also as a hard worker - he's really committed to this. Returning to Serie A? There was never an opportunity to come back to Italy."

Tonali featured 110 times in all competitions for Newcastle, scoring 10 goals and registering 10 assists.

He will become Spurs' sixth summer signing after the arrivals of Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Martin Dubravka and Mateus Fernandes.
