Cristo Fernandez, the Mexican actor best known for playing the exuberant striker Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso, has signed a professional contract with American second-division club El Paso Locomotive after impressing during a two-month trial.

The 35-year-old is making an unlikely return to football years after an injury ended his playing ambitions as a teenager. Before turning to acting, Fernandez was part of the academy setup at Mexican club Tecos, but a serious injury at 15 forced him to abandon the sport.

Now, life appears to be imitating art. Like his character in the hit Apple TV series, Fernandez will play as a forward for the USL Championship side.

El Paso is getting not only another attacking option, but also a strong personality in the dressing room,” head coach Junior Gonzalez told ESPN. “His passion for the game and his leadership qualities have already had a positive impact on the squad.”

Fernandez could make his debut for El Paso later this month in a USL Cup tie against Alta.

“Football has always been a huge part of who I am,” Fernandez said after completing the move. “I never let go of the dream of playing professionally. I’m incredibly grateful to El Paso for giving me this opportunity and for trusting me to fight for my place from day one.

“It’s always been about believing in yourself, taking risks and chasing your dreams. Maybe I’m a crazy person with crazy dreams, but to me, this all makes perfect sense.”
