Going 24 years without winning the World Cup is painful for all 210 million Brazilians, who are desperate to win the tournament this time, hoping to repeat the feat of 1994, when they won in the United States. Back then, Brazil had also gone two decades without a title and made history.

Japan, on the other hand, have never won the World Cup and arrive at the tournament with a strong, well-coached team. Far from being favourites, they will not make things easy for Brazil and promise to compete fiercely.

For this match, Brazil are clear favourites to progress, but in football anything can happen. Whoever qualifies will know they have fought hard to stay alive in the World Cup. Pedro Rocha, betting expert at Flashscore, has picked out three tips for this big World Cup clash. Check them out!

Brazil favourites in Houston

Brazil face Japan this Monday with a clear objective. With Vini Jr in top form, they are favourites against the Japanese. Victory is almost an expectation among Brazilian fans, who have waited 24 years to see their side lift the World Cup again and are desperate to end that drought.

Carlo Ancelotti's side finished top of their group with seven points, while Japan progressed as runners-up with five. Both teams impressed during the group stage.

The most recent meeting between the sides ended in a 3-2 victory for Japan, but the overall head-to-head record strongly favours Brazil. Of the last five meetings, Brazil have won four and Japan one.

Current form and the overall context make Brazil the obvious pick, with attractive odds on offer.

Tip: Brazil to win – odds 7/10 with bet365

Explanation: This bet wins if Brazil beat Japan in normal time. The number of goals scored does not matter.

Vini Jr is Ancelotti's trusted man

Vini Jr has been Brazil's standout player at this World Cup. The number seven has scored in all three matches so far and already has four goals in the tournament, with only Messi ahead of him on five. Brazil's attack is being built around him, and it is paying off.

If Brazil are to progress, Vini is likely to be at the heart of everything they do. The forward reached the peak of his career under Carlo Ancelotti, winning two Champions League titles with Real Madrid in 2022 and 2024, and will now be hoping to enjoy similar success on the international stage.

Brazil scored seven goals during the group stage, with Vini contributing four of them, while conceding just once. Japan, meanwhile, scored seven and conceded three. Vini is in outstanding form.

Tip: Vini Jr to score or assist – odds 4/5 with bet365

Explanation: This bet wins if Vini Jr scores or provides an assist during the match. The goal can come at any stage of the game.

At least two goals

Brazil and Japan have scored a combined 14 goals at this World Cup. Both sides have an attacking approach and are unlikely to sit back or settle for the scoreline.

Our tip for this match is over 1.5 goals. Given the quality of the players on both sides and the importance of the occasion, at least two goals looks a likely outcome.

This has happened in all three of Brazil's matches and all three of Japan's at the tournament. In a knockout tie, the team that scores first is likely to shape the game, leaving more space as the match opens up. We believe that will be the case again.

Tip: Over 1.5 goals – odds 1/3 with bet365

Explanation: This bet wins if at least two goals are scored in the match. Scores such as 1-1, 2-0 and 0-2 are all winning outcomes.
