Scotland head into their last match of the group stage needing a point to almost certainly secure progress to the next round. All that stands in their way is the five-time World Cup winners, Brazil.

Scotland sit on three points heading into their final group game, knowing that qualification for the knockout rounds is within their grasp. Unfortunately for the Scots, Brazil are their opponent in the final game.

Steve Clarke’s men were toothless in attack against Morocco and conceded inside 90 seconds, meaning they were chasing the game from virtually the beginning.

Brazil put the disappointment from the draw in their opening game behind them and took all three points against Haiti. Matheus Cunha was the star of the show, and he will be hoping to get on the scoresheet again against Scotland.

Three points are likely to be the special number that determines which country will be the best third-placed teams so goal difference will become important.

Scotland team news

Three Scots were seen as doubts heading into this tie - Scott McKennaAaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson.

McKenna has not played in the tournament yet because of a calf injury, whilst Hickey missed the Morocco game after picking up a knock against Haiti.

Ferguson was absent from training on the weekend, along with the other two, but news from the Scotland assistant manager, Steven Naismith, is that all three will be fit for Wednesday’s game.

Ferguson is important to Scotland too, leading the way for the team at the World Cup for tackles made (8), interceptions (4) and duels won (20), with only Jack Hendry (120) having completed more passes than Ferguson (101).

Scotland predicted lineup v Brazil, (5-4-1)

Coach: Steve Clarke

Gunn; Hickey, Hendry, Hanley, Robertson, Tierney; Christie, Ferguson, McTominay, McGinn; Adams.

Brazil team news

Raphinha had to go off against Haiti with an injury in the first half. Reports are that the injury is not as serious as first thought, and he should be able to play a part in the squad later in the tournament.

His replacement in that match was Bournemouth’s Rayan, and you imagine the teenager will start this match. Alternatively, Carlo Ancelotti could turn to Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli to start, but with him being mainly a left-winger, rather than a right, Rayan is more likely to start.

Brazil's record goalscorer Neymar could also be an alternative to take Raphinha's spot, but, having just come back from injury, he is unlikely to start.

On Martinelli’s favoured left wing will be Vinicius Junior, who has been involved in six goals in his last five games for Brazil in all competitions (3G, 3A), scoring in both group stage games so far.

Brazil predicted lineup v Scotland, (4-2-3-1)

Coach: Carlo Ancelotti

Alisson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Santos; Casemiro, Guimaraes; Rayan, Paqueta, Vinicius Junior; Cunha.

Where to watch?

In the UK, this match between Scotland and Morocco will be shown live on BBC One and streamed through the iPlayer.

Head-to-Head record

Brazil and Scotland will face each other in the FIFA World Cup for the fifth time (after 1974, 1982, 1990 and 1998), with only Argentina v Netherlands having been played more times since the 1974 edition (6).

Scotland and Brazil’s first FIFA World Cup encounter in 1974 ended in a goalless draw. Since then, Brazil have won their last three matches against Scotland at the tournament.

Overall, the two teams have faced each other 10 times, with the South Americans unbeaten (W8, D2). They are the team that Scotland have faced the most in international football without ever winning.

In the tournament so far, Brazil have one draw and one win, sitting first in the group on four points. Scotland are currently third, with three points after winning once and losing once. Importantly, Scotland have a goal difference of zero currently, which could be important.

Odds for Scotland vs Brazil

Brazil are the favourites to win this at bet365, coming in at 4/11, compared to Scotland at 7/1. A draw is at 4/1.

Odds correct at time of writing, subject to change.
