The wait is over! After 24 years without winning the World Cup, the Brazilian national team has hired Carlo Ancelotti and is confident they can end their title drought. Their first challenge will be against a tough opponent this Saturday (13th), as they face Morocco, who won the last meeting between the two sides and arrive at the tournament in strong form.

Brazil had a turbulent run-up to the World Cup, changing managers four times and, on paper, would not be considered title contenders. However, a team with five stars on their chest must always be taken seriously.

With several star players in the squad and an elite coach at the helm, the Seleção could spring a surprise and go into their opening match as favourites.

More details on Brazil v Morocco

Ancelotti has only been in charge for a year, overseeing 13 matches in that time, but there is plenty of talent in the squad and the outcome could be surprising. In their warm-up friendlies, the Seleção beat Panama 6-2 and Egypt 2-1. The starting line-up is still being finalised due to injury issues, but the eleven on the pitch will be the best available.

Morocco, on the other hand, had their best World Cup campaign in 2022 and arrive once again as a strong side. The African team are unbeaten in 29 matches, have some top players, but are not considered favourites for this match.

The last meeting between the two sides was a friendly in 2023, which Morocco won 2-1, with goals from Boufal and Sabiri.

Brazil aiming for a sixth title

Brazil did not have a great World Cup cycle and arrive without a fully prepared team, but everyone who knows the history of the five-time champions is aware that they tend to rise to the occasion when things aren't going their way. In 1994 and 2002, their last two titles, Brazil arrived at the tournament as underdogs but peaked at the right time and lifted the trophy.

Except for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when they drew 1-1 with Switzerland, Brazil have won every World Cup opener since 1982. In 1978, in Argentina, Brazil drew with Sweden (1-1). The team only lost their opening match in 1930 and 1934, the first two editions of the tournament. In 22 World Cups, that's 17 wins, three draws and two defeats.

The record is excellent for Brazil, who could all but secure qualification with a win over Morocco. Both teams are favourites to progress from the group in first and second place. It won't be an easy match, but the five-time champions' superiority should prevail. Brazil to win!

Tip: Brazil to win – odds 13/20 (bet365)

Bet explanation: the bet will be a winner if Brazil beat Morocco in their World Cup opener. The prediction stands regardless of the number of goals scored in the match.

Vini Jr at his peak with Ancelotti

Vinícius Júnior reached the peak of his career at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, with the pair winning two UEFA Champions Leagues together (2022 and 2024). Their successful partnership is being rekindled with the national team and is already bearing fruit. Previously criticised for underwhelming performances, the number 7 is now on an upward trajectory and is expected to be Brazil's main man at the 2026 World Cup.

In 49 appearances for the national team, Vini has scored just nine goals. Of those, three have come under Ancelotti (13 matches). The numbers may not be eye-catching yet, but his performances are clearly improving. The 25-year-old forward is not hiding and is always looking to get on the scoresheet.

Against Egypt in the last friendly, Vini played just 45 minutes. In that time, he had two shots, with an xG of 1.18. For the match against Morocco, with much more at stake and likely to play more minutes, Vini could easily double his attempts. The team is being built around him. Expect Vini to shine.

Tip: Vinícius Júnior to have more than 3 shots – odds 57/100 (bet365)

Bet explanation: the bet will be a winner if Vini Jr has at least four attempts in the match. The shots do not need to result in goals for the prediction to be valid.

Casemiro to be carded

Casemiro was one of the key figures in Brazil's eliminations in 2018 and 2022. In 2018, the midfielder was booked in the previous round and missed the decisive match. Fernandinho, who replaced him, scored an own goal. In 2022, Casemiro played well against Croatia but hesitated to foul Modric in the move that led to the equaliser in extra time.

For this match, a good bet is on the midfielder being carded, whether yellow or red. As Ancelotti's leader and the man shielding the defence, Casemiro is always up against the best dribblers and often finds himself exposed. If you're going to back any Brazilian player to be booked, Casemiro is your man.

At 34, he's losing a bit of pace and sometimes arrives late in the tackle. Against Croatia in March, he was booked at the end of the first half. Hakimi, Brahim Diaz and Ounahi are a constant threat. Watch out for the cards.

Tip: Casemiro to be carded – odds 8/5 (bet365)

Bet explanation: the bet will be a winner if midfielder Casemiro is shown a card in the match. The card can be yellow or red. Either will result in a winning bet.
