France defender William Saliba hailed record-breaking striker Kylian Mbappe after the Real Madrid star became the country's all-time leading goalscorer during their 3-1 win over Senegal in New York on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old forward scored his 58th goal for Les Bleus with a brace against their Group I rivals, to exact a measure of revenge for their infamous defeat in 2002.

It took his World Cup tally to 14 goals, one adrift of Brazil's Ronaldo and two behind all-time leaders Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi, and Saliba, speaking before Messi drew level with the German with a hat-trick against Algeria later in the day, said it was only a matter of time before he extends his streak.

"Of course, I think he has everything to beat the record. I hope he's gonna do it in this tournament. He has everything and I'm sure that he will do it," he told reporters.

Mbappe equalled Oliver Giroud's national record on 66 minutes after latching on to a superb Michael Olise pass to break the deadlock after a lacklustre first half.

But the game burst in to life in the final moments, and the French captain saved his best for last as he thumped home a long-range finish in the sixth minute of stoppage time to seal a memorable win for France on his 99th international appearance.

Mbappe's sensational strike came after Senegal substitute Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back after Bradley Barcola doubled their lead.

"It was crazy where I was because we just conceded the first goal 30 seconds before, and just one minute (later) we scored a banger. So yeah, I was so happy. Crazy goal," he said.

Les Bleus have reached the final in four of the last seven World Cups and head into this tournament as one of the favourites again, though the Arsenal defender has urged caution.

"We are not favourites," he said. "(There are) a lot of teams who can win this tournament."

"Of course we have a good team, I can’t lie. If we want to win (the World Cup) we have to beat everyone (but) we are not the only the favourite," he added.
