Argentina

Further forward, Messi remains the central figure, although this Argentina side no longer depends exclusively on him to create danger. Julián Álvarez has fully settled into the starting striker role after another excellent season in Spain, while Lautaro Martínez gives Scaloni a second elite option through the middle.
Thiago Almada and Giuliano Simeone continue gaining importance because of their mobility and work rate, while Nico González keeps the trust of the coaching staff thanks to his tactical flexibility.
One unexpected addition was José López from Palmeiras, brought in as a more physical attacking alternative after Joaquín Panichelli’s serious injury late in the season.
Among the most discussed absences were Alejandro Garnacho, Emiliano Buendía and Matías Soulé, all left out after inconsistent seasons or strong competition in attacking areas.
Argentina may not arrive with the same emotional urgency that surrounded them in Qatar, but they still possess something few teams can match: a clear identity, proven chemistry and players who know exactly how to compete in tournament football.

Austria arrive at the 2026 World Cup as one of Europe’s most uncomfortable teams to face. Under Ralf Rangnick, the national side finally embraced a style that fits the profile of its players: intense pressing, vertical football and relentless energy without the ball. The result has been a clear evolution over the last two years.
Their performance at Euro 2024 confirmed that progress. Austria finished top of a difficult group featuring France, the Netherlands and Poland, although the round-of-16 defeat to Turkey also showed there is still room to grow against elite opposition.
Rangnick’s Austria are built to suffocate opponents. The team presses aggressively for the full 90 minutes and attacks quickly once possession is recovered, with many of the squad shaped by the tactical intensity of the Bundesliga and Red Bull football philosophy.
The biggest question surrounds David Alaba. Injuries have limited his continuity at Real Madrid over the last two seasons, but Rangnick still sees him as a fundamental leader whenever he is physically available. If he cannot start regularly, Kevin Danso is expected to step in despite a difficult campaign with Tottenham.
Marcel Sabitzer remains one of the most important players in the system thanks to his versatility and ability to balance the midfield, combining work rate with technical quality.

Algeria have qualified for five World Cups in the past, first appearing on the big stage in 1982. Their best effort to date came back in 2014 when reaching the Round of 16. Can they improve on that effort in the US?

The challenge in North America will be finding that balance. Algeria enter a difficult group with questions to answer, but also with enough quality to believe a place in the knockout rounds is within reach.

Jordan
Does Jordan have a chance of getting out of Group J and making it into the knockout rounds of the World Cup? Many respected pundits predict their stay will be short-lived, and pricing Jordan like an exit after three games is likely.
Jordan are ranked 63rd in the world by FIFA, and that matters to the betting traders. The pre-competition odds suggest Jordan will end in fourth place, with many believing they’ll fail to capture a single point at this level.
Despite being the outsider of the four teams, you can back Jordan to qualify at fantastic odds. The 40/1 available on them winning the division is attractive, but I don’t expect it to receive too much attention.
What Jordan lack in individual star power, they make up for with cohesion. This is a group that has spent years growing together and whose greatest strength is not any single player, but the collective understanding built through a successful cycle that included a historic run to the AFC Asian Cup final.
The face of the team remains Mousa Al-Taamari. The winger carries much of the attacking responsibility and gives Jordan a level of creativity and unpredictability that few players in the region can match. Opponents know where the danger comes from, yet stopping him remains another matter entirely.
Tactically, Jordan are disciplined, compact and comfortable playing without the ball. They rarely lose their shape and have developed a reputation for frustrating stronger opponents before striking in transition. That mentality has helped them compete above expectations on several occasions over the last two years.
There is, however, one major concern. Yazan Al-Naimat, arguably the team's second-most important attacking player, misses the tournament after suffering a serious knee injury. For a squad that does not possess great depth in the final third, replacing his goals and movement will be a difficult challenge.
Jordan enter their first World Cup as underdogs, but that label is unlikely to bother them. If recent years have proven anything, it is that this team is comfortable when nobody expects them to succeed.

Marcel Sabitzer: Fancy an Austrian to score the most goals at the World Cup 2026? You’ll enjoy a large price on Sabitzer leaving with the Golden Boot. He boasts energy, leadership, and attacking quality, as confident shooting as he is assisting a teammate. The 32-year-old is likely to start every game for his nation, meaning backers will get value for money.
Mousa Al-Taamari: Jordan’s best player, Mousa is reliable in possession of the football. He’s always keen to take an opponent on, dribble past him and move into an attacking position. The 28-year-old plays for French club Rennes and has already scored over 20 international goals. Football fans hope Al-Tamari can improve those numbers during June.
Riyad Mahrez: A man who needs no introduction to followers of European football. The winger has played for Leicester City and Manchester City in the Premier League, but is currently active in Saudi Arabia. Mahrez is the Algerian captain, and at 35 years old, this will be his final World Cup. Mahrez will want to sign off in style, driving his men out of the group.
Group dynamics

The odds available at bet365 show traders agree with me on this one. It would be a huge shock if the defending champions didn’t win the pool, but I’m confident they’ll get the job done within two games.
Algeria to qualify @ 4/11 (bet365)
Algeria’s experience should be enough to see them progress to the knockout rounds. They were almost faultless in qualifying, scored 24 goals in 10 games, and arrive with a strong squad. Algeria start against Argentina, so it will be playing catch-up, but can finish strong.
Having backed Argentina to win the group and selected Algeria as the value bet to qualify, I’ll combine the two at nice odds. Bet on Argentina to win and Algeria to finish second in a forecast. The order must be correct for you to win this one. The rewards are worth the risk.
