The Perfectionist on the Touchline
Thomas Tuchel’s coaching career has taken a highly unusual path. The former defender was just 25 when a serious cartilage injury in his knee forced him to end his playing days early.
Afterwards, he worked behind the bar at the legendary Stuttgart venue "Radio Bar" to finance his business studies.
Nevertheless, his former coach Ralf Rangnick quickly recognised Tuchel’s strong tactical understanding. The current Austria manager actively supported his former protege and helped him secure a role as youth coach at VfB Stuttgart in 2000. Via FC Augsburg, he eventually moved on to 1. FSV Mainz 05.
In 2009, he led the Mainz U19s to the national championship. When it became clear during pre-season that working with Jorn Andersen would be highly problematic, the club parted ways with the Dane – and, to everyone’s surprise, replaced him with the then completely unknown Tuchel.
The club’s extremely risky decision was soon rewarded. Tuchel repeatedly demanded greater discipline from his team – and was never afraid to criticise his players in front of the cameras. His outburst at Shawn Parker in particular has long since achieved cult status in Germany.
Tuchel is renowned for his perfectionism. He’s a coach who pays close attention to his players’ diet and sleep patterns. Intellectually sharp, rhetorically brilliant and often charismatic – but he can also be extremely demanding.
Tuchel is not afraid to clash with others if he feels the professionalism around him doesn’t meet his high standards. He’s not a "people person" like Jurgen Klopp, but impresses above all with his expertise and knowledge of the game.
His greatest triumph as a coach came in 2021, when he guided a struggling Chelsea side to the UEFA Champions League title with an unconventional defensive approach.
After a brief and unsuccessful spell at FC Bayern, he took charge of the England national team in January 2025 – becoming the first German to do so.
At the upcoming World Cup, the Three Lions have made winning the title their clear objective.
