The Premier League have explained the decision not to award Tottenham a late penalty in their 1-1 draw with Leeds on Monday, May 11th.

Tottenham failed to take full advantage of West Ham’s defeat to Arsenal, and now sit just two points above the relegation zone with two games to go.

It could have been very different, however, with VAR deciding not to award Spurs a penalty after James Maddison went down in the box.

Maddison hit the deck following a challenge from Leeds' Lukas Nmecha during stoppage time.

Referee Jarred Gillett waved away the appeals and after VAR took a look, they stood by the on-field decision.

The Premier League have now explained the decision via their Match Centre page on X.

“The referee’s call of no penalty to Tottenham Hotspur was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Nmecha played the ball,” they said.
