The Kentucky Derby is one of the most popular and important fixtures on the global horse racing calendar. The first leg of the Triple Crown, a star-studded pack goes to post on the opening Saturday in May at Churchill Downs Racecourse in Louisville, Kentucky. 2026 brings the 152nd running of a Grade 1 Stakes, which is more than 150 years old.
Sovereignty won the prize 12 months ago on sloppy ground for jockey Junior Alvarado, trainer William I Mott, and owner Godolphin. A time of 2:02:31 would've been good enough to claim three of the last five renewals, but we'll see a new Kentucky Derby champion crowned this weekend. Which one of the competitive field will impress a bumper audience?
The betting apps featured on this page, including bet365, offer an impressive list of pre-race betting markets, with generous odds attached. You can pick the winner, bet each-way on an outsider or try your luck on the forecast. Sports betting analyst Frank Monkhouse guides readers through the field before highlighting his best bets on the Kentucky Derby 2026.

Kentucky Derby 2026 race details
Here are five things you need to know about the Kentucky Derby 2026 before betting.
1. Saturday, 2nd May, Churchill Downs.
2. The 10 furlongs make it a stamina test.
3. Renegade is the antepost favourite with major sportsbooks.
4. We could see up to 20 runners start the race.
5. It's a Grade 1 flat race run on dirt.
Race winner - Renegade
My first runner worth a look is Renegade. Here, we have a horse with the breeding, pace, and character to mount a serious challenge. Unfortunately, traders working at UKGC bookmakers have their eyes on this one too, making Renegade their early favourite. He was popular when the antepost market opened, and has continued to attract support this week.
Todd Pletcher, winner of this race in 2010 and 2017, sends out his fancied three-year-old colt. Renegade arrives fresh from a career-best win in the Arkansas Derby, convincingly beating runner-up Silent Tactic. He was also sent off as the betting favourite that day at Oaklawn Park, and delivered backers a solid profit with a bit to spare. There's more to come.
In addition to his strong recent form, also scoring at Tampa Bay in February in a Listed Race, Renegade has big-race experience. The first half-mile can win or lose a horse the race. Thankfully, Renegade has proven that he doesn't need to lead early. Instead, he'll plot to stalk the early leaders and use his pace at the business end of the contest. A worthy favourite.
Tip: Renegade win @ 9/2 (bet365)
Bet explanation: If Renegade finishes first in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, your bet wins, and you'll secure a profit.
Race winner - Commandment
There's no denying that Renegade is a strong favourite with the skills needed to deliver a huge win. However, his draw is a slight concern, meaning some would happily oppose the market leader with one at a higher price. If that's you, I'd like to highlight Commandment. The Brad Cox-trained contender will have Luis Saez in the saddle on race day.
Commandment represents a stable that gave us the 2021 Kentucky Derby champion Madaloun. He sparkled when beating The Puma over 1m 1f at Gulfstream Park in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby last month. What impressed me most about that win was how he was held up before using his pace to stage a late smash-and-grab on the prizemoney.
Commandment will require a career-best performance if he's to join the exclusive list of Kentucky Derby winners. Backers have good reason to be confident, especially if building on that strong showing at Gulstream. The betting traders make him the second favourite, and they don't give that tag away lightly, especially in a race as important as the Kentucky Derby.
Tip: Commandment win @ 5/1 (bet365)
Bet explanation: If Commandment wins the Kentucky Derby, your bet pays. If any other horse wins the race, your bet loses.
Each way - Incredibolt
My third and final Kentucky Derby 2026 runner worth following is priced more appealingly. Incredibolt is a pick that's best suited to each-way bets, with bet365 paying 1/5 the odds a place 1-2-3. That means if Incredibolt wins, you'll land a profit, but if he finishes second or third, you'll still see a return on your bet. A £10 each-way bet will cost you £20 to place.
It's true that backers will need their fair share of luck to get Incredibolt home and hosed as the latest champion, but that's reflected in the price. I believe he'll run much better than the current odds suggest. He's often quick off the start and has the pace to lead early. If he finds a good position and can defend it, Riley Mott's runner will be difficult to budge near the end.
Incredibolt won at Colonial Downs in March over 1m 1f, finishing clear of the chasing pack. Jockey Jaime Torres gave him a patient ride that day, occupying the major places before putting his foot on the gas to lead and race home inside the final furlong. Remember, you don't need Incredibolt to win this race, just finish in the top three.
Tip: Incredibolt each-way @ 25/1 (bet365)
Bet explanation: Incredibolt must finish in the top three of the 2026 Kentucky Derby.
