The Dallas Cowboys have reworked the contract of star quarterback Dak Prescott, the NFL team revealed on Monday, a move that could help in talks on a long-term extension.

Prescott is entering the final season of a $160 million (£125.7m) deal for four seasons he signed in 2021.

The Cowboys changed Prescott's $5 million (£3.9m) roster bonus into a signing bonus and added two more voidable years to the deal, conversions Prescott had to agree upon.

The changes give the Cowboys another $4 million (£3.1m) under the NFL salary cap this year but would boost his cap hit in 2025 to $40 million (£31m).

"Dak has been willing to work with us and we've had great discussions about his contract," Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones said. "That's about all we'll say about our negotiations with him. We want to keep those private."

The Cowboys are also working on contract extensions with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass-rushing defender Micah Parsons.

"We won't get into timelines, but it's a priority for us, similar to CeeDee, very similar, and same with Micah," Jones said. "That's our goal - is to work on getting those three guys signed."

Prescott, 30, led the NFL last season with 36 touchdown passes and 410 completions overall. He is a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback and was the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. But Prescott has struggled in the playoffs, going only 2-5 for the Cowboys, including a home wild-card round loss to Green Bay last season.

The Cowboys have not advanced to the conference finals since their most recent Super Bowl title run, which came in the 1995 campaign.
