Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, scoring 14 goals and bagging 11 assists in all competitions.
However, after the Spanish giants signed Gordon from Newcastle, the club decided not to pursue a move for Rashford despite the clause in his loan deal allowing him to be signed for around £26 million.
Now, as the pair feature together in the England squad across the pond, Shearer has spoken to Betfair about how the awkward situation could hurt the Three Lions’ chances as they fight for the World Cup.
“It's possibly not ideal for England with Gordon joining Barcelona and potentially taking Rashford’s spot. You've got the manager saying, 'Okay, let's just for the sake of a month or five weeks all pull together.' But I guess that's what happens; that's the rivalry you're going to get at clubs anyway. That’s what used to happen in the nineties when I was there.
“It's a question we don't know the answer to because we don't know what Barcelona's thoughts are on Marcus, and whether they can go back and say, "Well, we've got someone in, you either take it or leave it." Then it's up to Man United what they do."
“You have no choice. You're representing your country in the biggest competition there is. For me, it was pretty standard to say, "This is what I'm doing for the next month, and whatever happens after that can sort of take care of itself." That's the mindset the players will have, and for me, I don't think that's difficult, no.”
Rashford has removed the name Barcelona from his bio on all social media platforms, suggesting the deal is off. Whether this will affect his relationship with Gordon and the team’s performances is an interesting question heading into the tournament.
