Wednesday’s hosts have made an underwhelming start to their European campaign, picking up just two points so far.

Following an encouraging 1-1 draw with Roma, the Turkish giants were subjected to a 6-0 hammering at Villa Park. A last-gasp equaliser from Slavia Prague’s Pavel Kacor prevented them from securing maximum points on matchday three, a result which preceded two damaging domestic defeats.

Last month’s 2-1 loss to arch-rivals Galatasaray pre-empted the exit of experienced head coach İsmail Kartal, before mid-table Goztepe won by the same scoreline at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal brought an abrupt end to Liverpool’s positive spell of form, nicking a 1-0 win at Anfield thanks to Kai Havertz’s early strike.

Prior to the weekend, the Reds had triumphed in all four of their previous outings as part of a run that included high-scoring victories over Champions League opponents LASK and Villarreal.

Having commenced proceedings by beating Atlético Madrid, Andoni Iraola’s men look likely to clinch automatic progression to the last sixteen. Paris Saint-Germain are the only side to have scored more goals in the Champions League this season, so don’t be surprised if the visitors produce another attacking masterclass against what is statistically one of the worst defences in the competition.

One of Wednesday’s two teatime kick-offs, live coverage of Liverpool’s clash with Fenerbahce commences at 17:00 (GMT) on TNT Sports 1.

Fenerbahce team news

Fenerbahce are currently experiencing a minor injury crisis, with no less than five first-team players currently unavailable.

Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde hasn’t featured since sustaining a partial hamstring tear during his team’s Champions League qualifying clash with Sturm Graz, a development that resulted in the collapse of his proposed move to Roma.

Nathan Ake is still nursing a groin strain, while fellow centre-back Kojo Peprah Oppong also looks set to be out. The Ghanaian made his first start for the club on Saturday following a move from Ligue 1 outfit Nice, but was forced off in the closing stages with a muscle problem.

After playing through the pain barrier during the back end of last season, Marco Asensio recently underwent surgery to address damaged cartilage in his knee. As a result, the former Real Madrid playmaker will be out until the beginning of next year. Elsewhere in the treatment room, summer signing Amara Diouf continues his lengthy rehabilitation from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

However, the Yellow Canaries will be buoyed by the return of Mason Greenwood, who missed the clash with Göztepe through illness. The Bradford-born striker experienced just one win in his six previous appearances against Liverpool, netting for Manchester United in a narrow FA Cup triumph almost six years ago.

The availability of another Englishman provides further good news for the home side, who are able to field Archie Brown despite a lengthy domestic ban. After engaging in a physical altercation with Galatasaray captain Abdulkerim Bardakci in the aftermath of a heated Istanbul derby, the ex-Derby County full-back was handed a three-match suspension.

Liverpool team news

Although Andoni Iraola’s squad is in a far better place, the Basque tactician remains without the services of several long-term absentees.

Having ruptured his Achilles tendon during the second leg of last season’s Champions League quarter-final meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, Hugo Ekitike is now entering the latter stages of his recovery.

The French forward netted in Giovanni Leoni’s most recent competitive appearance, which came while making his Liverpool debut way back in September 2025. A severe cruciate ligament tear has kept him sidelined ever since, but the young Italian is expected to be back in first-team training before the end of the month.

There’s also been a positive update regarding the condition of Conor Bradley, who suffered a major knee injury at the start of the year. Bradley could be ready for the visit of Manchester United later this month, when the Merseysiders resume Premier League action following the season’s second international break. As Jeremie Frimpong is close to overcoming the latest of a long list of muscle issues, Iraola could soon have a full complement of right-backs available.

Dominik Szoboszlai was introduced from the bench against Arsenal after dealing with a niggling hamstring problem, while Víctor Munoz also made a short cameo on Sunday afternoon.

The Spanish winger emerged for the second half of last month’s comeback victory over Bournemouth with strapping around his knee, due to picking up a knock early on. Although that didn’t stop him from netting the equaliser, he did miss Liverpool’s subsequent three fixtures and is therefore slowly edging towards full fitness.

Where to watch on TV or live stream?

TNT Sports is currently the United Kingdom’s main home of Champions League football, although this will change when Paramount acquires broadcasting rights to UEFA’s most prestigious club competition from the 2027/28 season.

Those with the required subscription can watch events at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium unfold on TNT Sports 1, or alternatively by signing into the HBO Max app using any compatible electronic device. HBO Max recently replaced Discovery+ as the network’s official streaming partner, so all TNT Sports customers are able to access this platform via their existing account.

Following Fenerbahce vs Liverpool, TNT Sports 1 viewers can watch Arsenal take on Slavia Prague in the Czech capital.

Head-to-head record

Although these two have never previously met, Liverpool fans will see a familiar face in the opposition dugout on Wednesday night.

After Ismail Kartal resigned from his post, Dirk Kuyt was appointed Fenerbahce manager on an interim basis. The retired Dutch winger enjoyed a successful six-year spell on Merseyside, registering 71 goals in 285 appearances before leaving to join his current employers in July 2012.

Liverpool are strong favourites to prevail in Istanbul, the location of arguably the greatest moment in the club’s storied history. However, with a record of just four wins across 11 meetings with Turkish opposition in the European Cup/Champions League, they won’t be taking anything for granted.

The latest victory in that sequence came in March of this year, when goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch, and the departed Mohamed Salah – who incidentally now plies his trade at Turkish outfit Trabzonspor – put Galatasaray to the sword at Anfield.

It’s also worth noting that Wednesday’s visitors lost each of their last four Champions League contests in Turkey – Liverpool have never been defeated in five consecutive away fixtures in UEFA’s flagship club competition by teams from one nation.
