Our picks: Six-pointer for Championship strugglers and Portugal entertains

Our picks of the matches at home and abroad to watch this weekend

Two of the Championship's struggling sides play out a potentially huge clash at the bottom of the table, while the four-way title race in Portugal's Primeira Liga really heats up on Sunday.

Elsewhere, there are more mega-clashes at the top of Germany's Bundesliga and the Dutch Eredivisie, while Napoli will be expecting goals in their upcoming Serie A fixture.

Here are our picks of the matches at home and abroad to watch this weekend:

Sheffield Wednesday v QPR - Ali Pollock

While it might be too early to declare anything a ‘six-pointer’, the clash between Sheffield Wednesday and QPR down in the Championship is about as close as you can get in December.

The Owls suffered the worst start to a campaign in Championship history but have since picked up under new manager Danny Rohl – winning three and drawing one of his eight games in charge.

Before that, they had picked up just three draws all season.

Similarly, QPR had a terrible start to the season and required a managerial change to see results start picking up, with new boss Marti Cifuentes overseeing an impressive turnaround.

The Londoners currently find themselves one point from safety while Wednesday sit seven points behind them.

If Rohl’s side are to seriously mount a push for survival, they need to pick up a win against their direct rivals to put themselves within touching distance of those above them.

Victory for QPR would be them out of the relegation zone – as long as Huddersfield dropped points.

Finding the net is where the ‘R’s’ struggle, with Kenneth Paal, Lyndon Dykes and Chris Willock leading the way on three goals each.

Likewise, Wednesday also lack goals in their squad.

Michael Smith has three, followed by Anthony Musaba and Bailey Cadamarteri on two.

With the stakes incredibly high, it could be a very exciting affair when the two clubs meet on Saturday.

AZ Alkmaar v PSV - Anthony Paphitis

A top-quality clash at the top of the Eredivisie awaits when AZ Alkmaar host the runaway juggernaut of PSV on Saturday evening.

Third-placed AZ - following a very positive first 10 games - have seemingly hit a bit of a wall of late with just two wins in their last six in the league.

A 4-1 victory against Almere City last time out in the league could be just the tonic for Pascal Jansen's side to get back to registering consistent wins again.

Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis has been a stalwart for AZ this term - his 18 goals in 15 outings putting him joint-top of the scoring charts next to Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez.

Pavlidis and his teammates will all need to be on the ball and braced for the arrival of PSV, who have been absolutely superb for the first half of the campaign.

Having already built a 10-point gap to second-placed Feyenoord, Peter Bosz's side have been perfect with 15 wins from 15 games while terrorising defences (52 goals scored) and stifling attacks (six goals conceded).

The numbers truly boggle the mind and AZ will have much to consider given the threats PSV have all across the pitch.

Ex-Newcastle striker Luuk de Jong leads the scoring with 10 goals, exciting winger Johan Bakayoko has three goals and eight assists and Joey Veerman has three goals and nine assists from central midfield.

That is only scratching the surface with further mentions needed for the efforts of Guus Til and on-loan Bayern Munich winger Malik Tillman, who have both impressed too.

Both teams were in European action in midweek - AZ losing 2-0 in Poland to Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League while PSV drew 1-1 in a Champions League dead-rubber with Arsenal.

Napoli v Cagliari - Ste Carson

Reining Serie A champions Napoli have a mountain to climb if they are to defend their title from Inter, Juventus and co., but nothing is impossible.

Defeats to the aforementioned title rivals in their last two matches has Gli Azzurri perched a point behind Bologna in sixth.

Up next for the champions is lowly Cagliari, who have conceded 27 goals already this season and find themselves in 16th place, teetering above the drop.

Napoli, playing the role of hosts in the upcoming clash, should fancy themselves as sound winners and will indeed be desperate for three points.

Cagliari will be hoping Zito Luvumbo and Leonardo Pavoletti – who both have four goal contributions this term – can continue their relatively fine form.

Despite their whimpering position in the league table currently, Napoli are still capable of creating plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. Star man Victor Osimhen has already totted up six goals (and an assist) and his partner, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who hasn't enjoyed the most fruitful season, has still managed seven goal contributions.

Matteo Politano has been a pleasant surprise for Napoli, too, with seven goal contributions from midfield.

In truth, it should be a fairly straightforward victory for Walter Mazzarri's men – but that's not a phrase famous for backfiring, right?

Either way, the match promises to be entertaining for any neutrals wanting to see an exciting Napoli team in action.

Braga v Benfica - Brad Ferguson

With the top two Sporting and Porto facing each other on Monday, fans of Portuguese football are blessed with a tasty warm-up of sorts as third-placed Benfica travel to fourth-placed Braga on Sunday evening.

The hunting pack sit just one and two points off first respectively and will be desperate to capitalise on the opportunity to go top with a win - at least for 24 hours or so.

Benfica just about scraped a place in the Europa League play-offs with a dramatic win over RB Salzburg on Tuesday, retaining a spot in European competition in what has otherwise been a somewhat disappointing Champions League campaign.

Their domestic form has been much better though - the Eagles are unbeaten since their surprise opening-day defeat to Boavista in August, a run which has included nine victories in 13 outings and important wins over their title rivals above them.

Indeed, Benfica should really be top themselves but a recent skid in form that saw consecutive draws to Moreirense and SC Farense has allowed their rivals to sneak past through the back door.

Braga have been one of the more entertaining sides to watch in the Primeira Liga this season, leading the goalscoring charts with 36 but also conceding 20 - comfortably more than any other side in the top half.

In contrast to their opponents on Sunday, the Braguistas are on a solid run of four straight victories in the league, and like Benfica, they'll be buoyed by securing passage to the Europa League play-off round after their midweek Champions League venture.

The home side also have Simon Banza in their ranks. The Congolese forward is the league's top goalscorer with 13 goals in 13 appearances and is undoubtedly the one to watch from the perspective of the visitors' defence.

Angel Di Maria is of course the danger man for Benfica - the Argentine World Cup winner scored direct from a corner in midweek - and he's also the club's top scorer for the season with five.

It may be a case of attempting to shut out Braga's attack, nicking a goal and defending a lead for the reigning champions, who boast one of the best defensive records having conceded just nine so far this season.

Should Braga make the most of their attacking prowess early doors then fans could absolutely be in for a wild ride.

Bayern v Stuttgart - Joel Barnett

Another top-of-the-table tussle in the Bundesliga awaits on Sunday with second-placed Bayern at home to third-placed Stuttgart in the Südderby (Southern derby).

After a shock 5-1 defeat to Frankfurt last time out, Bayern will be hoping the Eagles do them a favour in the earlier kick-off against league leaders Leverkusen, who could move seven points clear at the top with a win.

Although the Bavarians still have a game in hand on both sides ahead of the weekend, they wouldn’t want to let Leverkusen vanish out of sight and allow their rivals Stuttgart - from neighbouring Swabia - to overtake them in the league.

Beating Man Utd in the Champions League midweek would do wonders for confidence, but they will need to be at their very best against a Stuttgart side who will have lofty ambitions of upsetting the odds at the Allianz Arena.

The Swabians’ four match winning streak in the league came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Leverkusen last weekend, but they will be looking to bounce back straight away as they bid to end their woeful record against Bayern.

Stuttgart have lost 68 of their last 108 matches against the Bavarians - no other team in the history of the competition has lost more - and their 81 defeats across all competitions still remains a German record.

It could be a classic, with Bayern (3.0) and Stuttgart (2.5) having the highest expected goals value per game - as well as the league’s top two goal scorers in Harry Kane (18) and Serhou Guirassy (16).
