Liverpool haven’t been at their best in the Premier League so far this season, but they did record a morale-boosting win over Ipswich Town in their last outing. Can they maintain that improvement in fortunes against Fulham at Anfield on Saturday? Flashscore betting analyst Richard Trenchard looks at the stats…

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool career got underway with 2-2 draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, so the 2-0 victory over the Tractor Boys last time out was timely.

Reds fans looking for positives will have noted that their side has scored six in three league games – an excellent ratio, while Alexander Isak appears to have put his injury woes behind him.

Add to that a confidence-boosting midweek 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and things are looking up.

That's not the direction Fulham fans are looking at. They have seen their side lose all three of their Premier League outings to date – conceding three in two of those – and look destined for a battle against relegation unless things improve quickly.

Former Liverpool player and now Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa will certainly have his work cut out for him on his return to Merseyside.

The rotation game

Trying to balance domestic and continental football doesn’t always work out well.

It was perhaps a factor behind Liverpool’s woes last term, so they have addressed squad depth issues by bringing in the likes of Bradley Barcola, Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo.

It means that Iraola has options to rest and rotate, which should ensure his Reds side arrives at Anfield on Saturday primed to take advantage of a fragile-looking Fulham team.

The Cottagers have shown an eye for goal this term. In fact, their xG count of 5.4 is actually higher than Arsenal’s right now and the same as Liverpool’s.

But it’s their defensive frailty that sets the alarm bells ringing. Only Crystal Palace have yielded more xG, with seven goals shipped in 270 minutes of football.

As mentioned, Liverpool have various routes to goal and with some improvements in defence – Jacquet and Araujo finally showing signs of warming to the task of the English game against Ipswich, we expect the Reds to kick on and compound Fulham’s misery.

Tip: Liverpool to Win @ 21/50 (Bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Liverpool win this game by any scoreline.

The history boys

Although past results between two teams should be taken with a pinch of salt (how many managers and players have they changed since?), there’s some fascinating history between Liverpool and Fulham.

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, the Reds have faced the Cottagers eight times. They have scored two or more in seven of those, with our bet selection here landing in 7/8.

Those numbers mean little without the context of the here and now, but there’s definitely a case for Liverpool making that particular milestone 8/9 on Saturday.

They’ve scored two goals in each of their three opening games – two of those opponents, you might argue, are more defensively stout than Fulham.

And the Cottagers have just been far too easy to open up so far… it seems unlikely that Arbeloa will be able to rectify that in a week on the training ground.

Tip: Liverpool Goals Range: 2-4 @ 4/7 (Bet365)

Explanation: Our bet lands if Liverpool score two, three or four goals in this game.

Shots fired

Both Liverpool and Fulham average 16 shots apiece per game this season.

Now, we’re not insinuating that this clash at Anfield will therefore have 32. But it’s interesting to see that Arbeloa’s side are still cracking shots away despite their issues in the defensive third of the pitch.

Liverpool will do a better job of restricting their chances of course, but even so Ipswich had 14 shots against the Reds last time out – if Fulham get anywhere near that, our selection is already halfway complete before we even account for the Reds’ action.

And they will surely have plenty of shots on Saturday. Even if they go ahead, they won’t sit back on their lead… the Anfield faithful simply won’t allow it.

Tip: Over 24.5 Shots @ 2/5 (Bet365)

Explanation: If there are 25 or more shots in this game in total, our bet lands.
