England hold off Mexico in drama-filled encounter to make quarter-finals
05:20 CET - Whilst the stadium DJ was blasting out Oasis' Wonderwall for the celebrating English supporters, Thomas Tuchel spoke to the English world feed:
"Very proud. Very, very proud," he said.
"They needed everything. That was super difficult. In the moments when we thought we'd catch some momentum, we had setbacks. That was a proper mentality.
"This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief."
Tuchel was asked what, if anything, can stop his team now after that win: "Norway? We need two days to take this in.
"This is Azteca, this is Mexico. It was a crazy, crazy game. We left everything out there, every single one of us. Now it's full steam ahead."
05:14 CET - Now what happens to Jarell Quansah?
FIFA have set an unexpected precedent by giving USA's Folarin Balogun a 'suspended' one-game ban, at the apparent insistence of US President Donald Trump. If there is to be any consistency in the administration of this tournament, they have no choice but to treat Quansah and every other player the same way through the rest of the knockout stage.
There'll be no fairness in football if Quansah is not playing against Norway.

05:05 CET - ENGLAND WIN IN MEXICO CITY!
Aaaaand, breathe. Could it be, dare we say, actually coming home? That was a phenomenal performance with the atmosphere - both literally and metaphorically - a massive uphill battle for Tuchel's men. They had to battle the sea level, 80,000 noisy spectators baying for their pain, and a gritty Mexican effort.
For England, they maintained a World Cup-winning mentality after Quansah's sending off.
The query is: just how much will that sap them physically and psychologically? It'll be a relief that it didn't go an additional 30 minutes.
04:58 CET - Five down, six to go. Mexico are flooding forward, as they have to do, but ten-man England continue to bed in and hold out.
May we remind you that Mexico last lost a competitive home game in 2018 - 2013 at the Azteca (in a World Cup qualifier). They have lost two of 89 matches at the Azteca across their entire history.
Mexico are playing with ten men because they have one player off the ground injured.
04:53 CET - 11 minutes of additional time to come. That's the 2026 World Cup for you.
04:50 CET - 87 minutes gone at Estadio Azteca and both teams are beginning to tire. England continue to hold on for dear life and could become just the third team in 90 games to beat Mexico at this iconic colosseum.
Harry Kane gets subbed off for Rogers in the 90th minute. That'll make extra time interesting if Mexico can equalise.
04:34 CET - The hydration break is taken at the 70-minute mark, so we've got at least another 20 minutes of this chaos.
04:29 CET - A very busy referee is now checking the video replays again for a potential penalty for Mexico!
Raul Jimenez scores from the spot to make it 3-2! This game cannot stop delivering drama.
04:20 CET - Ten-man England have a spot kick! Goalkeeper Raul Rangel is the instigator, tripping up an attacking Anthony Gordon without making contact with the ball. He was trying to win the ball so he does not get a card.
Harry Kane converts the penalty to extend England's lead at the 60-minute mark!
04:15 CET - It didn't take long for the drama to kick off again after Jarell Quansah was sent off for an awful studs-up sliding challenge which prompted a melee amongst the benches and dugouts of both teams. VAR intervened and the on-field referee Alireza Faghani didn't need long to deem that a straight red.
04:07 CET - The second half has kicked off after everyone took some time for a breather!
03:51 CET - England lead 2-1 at half-time thanks to Jude Bellingham having the 45 minutes of his life, scoring two goals and saving one.
Just take a look at the momentum that Mexico had immediately after their first goal.
03:48 CET - Pickford did oh so well to keep England in front in the first half of stoppage time, making his second save of the match.
Just moments later, it was Bellingham who made a goal-saving clearance from a Mexico corner. Had he not stopped Montes from lining up a shot, it almost certainly would have been 2-2.
03:43 CET - With his fourth goal of the tournament, Julian Quinones hits back for the home side!
Mexico sent a set piece into the box, Konsa accidentally trapped it into the feet of Quinones who shot from in front of the penalty spot over the top of a diving Pickford.
This has been an absolutely mental ten-minute period to say the least.
03:38 CET - ENGLAND DOUBLE THEIR LEAD AT THE AZTECA - ALSO THROUGH JUDE BELLINGHAM!
An aggressive shutdown from Anderson allowed England to go on the immediate attack once more. Bellingham linked up one-two with Harry Kane and scored from near the penalty spot.
He scores twice in 99 seconds to silence the stadium - other than the two sections of England supporters high up in the back of the stands behind one goal.
03:35 CET - ENGLAND LEAD AT THE AZTECA THROUGH JUDE BELLINGHAM!
Bukayo Saka received the ball on the right touchline, cut his way into the box and lofted the ball towards the far post where Bellingham put it away with a forward diving header.
03:22 CET - The first hydration break has been called with Mexico producing the only chance of the match so far. England's momentum is yet to be converted into anything meaningful.
Thomas Tuchel was very animated during his discussion with the players.
03:15 CET - Raul Jimenez records the first shot on target of the game with a pinpoint header that England keeper Jordan Pickford denies with a brilliant reflex save.
03:00 CET - Kick-off in Mexico City! The game is finally underway.
02:55 CET - Even though Estadio Azteca has been sold out for every game at this World Cup, the singing of the Mexican national anthem in the venue is without a doubt getting louder every time.
02:50 CET - The teams are getting ready to gather in the tunnel and head out for the anthem. All good for the new kickoff in just ten minutes.
02:15 CET - The players and the spectators are all warming up together now with 45 minutes to go!
02:00 CET - In other World Cup news while we wait - and this will come as a surprise to nobody - Belgium are exploring an official legal challenge to FIFA's decision to 'suspend' Folarin Balogun's suspension for 12 months.
Balogun is the first player since the introduction of yellow and red cards in 1970 to be available for his team's match after being sent off at a FIFA World Cup, and the procedure leading up to FIFA's decision is coming under increasingly heavy scrutiny after it was reported by the New York Times that US President Donald Trump personally intervened and lobbied FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to have the red card rescinded.
Trump all but confirmed his involvement in the case when he took to social media to "thank" FIFA for reversing what he described as an "injustice".
01:40 CET - The good news for now is that spectators have been allowed to return to their seats with the threat of lightning no longer present.
Outside the venue, the party has well and truly already started.
01:25 CET - We can now indeed confirm that the game has been pushed back to 7:00pm local time, which is 3am CET or 2am in the UK.
01:20 CET - We're awaiting an official confirmation from FIFA, but ESPN's Fernando Palomo is reporting from the stadium that kick-off has been delayed by one hour due to the prevailing storms.
00:45 CET - Both teams have submitted their starting lineups for the game:
Mexico's starting 11 is unchanged. For England, Jarell Quansah replaces Djed Spence at right-back, whilst Marcus Rashford has been dropped to the bench for Anthony Gordon.
00:30 CET - Next up is England's clash with Mexico at the Azteca. It's scheduled to kick off at 2 am, but reports are circling of a possible delay due to thunderstorms... stay tuned!

Haaland double sees Norway stun Brazil and reach World Cup quarters for first time
00:04 CET - Norway have beaten Brazil 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time!
All the talk before the game was about Norway's famous win over the Selecao in 1998 - they've repeated it, and then some, with this victory propelling Stale Solbakken's side to the last eight of the tournament, the furthest the nation has ever gone. The five-time champions, meanwhile, have been dumped out.
No prizes for guessing our Man of the Match - the hero of the day was the inimitable Erling Haaland, who scored twice in the second half to earn a Flashscore rating of 8.7 and seal the win for the Scandinavians, before Neymar scored a late consolation from the spot for Brazil.
This match will go down in history as one of Norway's greatest ever wins, but don't let that make you think they will stop here. They'll be eyeing the semi-finals now, with their next opponents the winners of Mexico and England, who meet in just under two hours.

00:02 CET - GOAL! Brazil have scored a late consolation from the penalty spot. Certainly, too little, too late this. Neymar has scored it, in what could be his last World Cup act.
23:53 CET - GOAL! HAALAND HAS ANOTHER AND NORWAY LEAD 2-0!
This time, Erling Haaland absolutely bullets one in from the edge of the area into the bottom corner. Brazil look stunned, and you can't blame them; they are going home... That moves the match-winner Haaland to seven goals for the tournament.
23:42 CET - GOAL! NORWAY HAVE BROKEN THE DEADLOCK LATE ON!
And who else but Erling Haaland?! The big Norwegian rose highest to power home a header, and it's 1-0 to the Scandinavians with just over 10 minutes to go. Could that be the winner?
That's Haaland's sixth goal of the tournament, taking him one behind Lionel Messi, who is at the top of the scoring charts with seven.
23:30 CET - We’ve reached the second hydration break now, which means we are entering the last quarter of the match’s regular time. Endrick has come on for Brazil and made an impact, but no one has yet scored… Neymar is now on as well for the Selecao! Could he be the difference?

Norway boss Stale Solbakken has made two changes at the break, with Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth both off, and Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup on.
22:51 CET - That's half-time at MetLife Stadium, and it remains goalless between Brazil and Norway. After a blistering start to the match in which Norway had a goal chalked off, and Brazil missed a penalty, things calmed somewhat. Brazil have mustered more chances, but the Norwegians are dominating the ball.
22:27 CET - We've reached the notorious 'hydration break' at MetLife Stadium, and it's fair to say it's been an entertaining match so far, with Norway having a goal chalked off early and Brazil missing a penalty. Surely, there will be goals in the remainder of this last-16 clash!
22:13 CET - Bruno Guimaraes has missed from the spot after Brazil were awarded a penalty after a VAR review!
Norway keeper Orjan Nyland chose the right way and saved the penalty at full stretch - what a moment that could prove to be. It's still goalless here, but it's certainly all happening!
The decision to award the penalty looked to be correct, with the video replay showing Norway's Kristoffer Ajer collecting Matheus Cunha in the area and not the ball.
22:04 CET - Oh my days, Norway almost had the dream start in New Jersey with Patrick Berg sweeping home brilliantly after a lovely build-up... but the goal was swiftly ruled out for offside. A very early warning shot fired at Brazil there!
21:55 CET - The players are coming out at MetLife Stadium for the epic Round of 16 clash between Brazil and Norway, which means kick-off is just around the corner!

20:45 CET - The lineups are for tonight's first clash between Brazil and Norway in New Jersey - check out who's starting below!
Gabriel Martinelli replaces the injured Lucas Paqueta in Brazil's only change, while Julian Ryerson is recalled for Norway after injury.
Martinelli, who scored the winner against Japan, starts on the left of Carlo Ancelotti's midfield. Rayan, 19, keeps his place in attack alongside Vinicius Junior and Matheus Cunha, with Raphinha and Neymar on the bench.
Ryerson returns to Norway's starting lineup after missing the win over Ivory Coast, with Marcus Holmgren Pedersen dropping to the bench. Erling Haaland leads Norway's attack, with captain Martin Odegaard also starting.
19:35 CET - There's been a very big development ahead of the USA's Round of 16 clash with Belgium tomorrow, with the co-hosts' star striker Folarin Balogun now available for the contest.
Balogun received a straight red card in the USA's Round of 32 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, but FIFA have now suspended his one-match ban, without US Soccer having appealed.
Reports suggest that the White House made a direct call to FIFA to ask Gianni Infantino to review the red card.

With France and Morocco already through to the quarter-finals after victories over Paraguay and Canada, respectively, four more nations will battle it out to join them in the last eight today.
First up at 22:00 CET, Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil take on a Norwegian side spearheaded by Erling Haaland, in what promises to be a fascinating contest at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
Following that clash, tournament co-hosts Mexico welcome England to the iconic Estadio Azteca, where El Tricolor have lost only twice in 89 competitive matches (W70, D17).

The 2026 World Cup took place from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was won by Spain, who beat Argentina in the final.
