Argentina beat 10-man Switzerland in extra time to set up England semi-final clash

The World Cup returns on Tuesday when France and Spain battle at 21:00 CET, 24 hours before England and Argentina meet in Atlanta.

The top-four (pre-tournament) FIFA ranked nations have made it through to the final four, illustrating that the cream of the crop really have gone all the way to the final week of the World Cup. Like millions of you, we can't wait to see what happens from here.

05:46 CET - Argentina were a bit fortunate to get a one-man advantage in the second half but they pounced on it and were rewarded for seeing out the moments in which their backs were against the wall, particularly for the 25 minutes after the first hydration break.

They've been rewarded with a semi-final booking in Atlanta.

05:33 CET - JULIAN ALVAREZ PUTS ARGENTINA IN FRONT! What a time for his maiden World Cup goal, struck from outside the box on the left half of the pitch, angling across the goalkeeper into the opposite side net. 

05:23 CET - A stubborn and resolute Switzerland defence have moved 15 minutes closer to a penalty shootout. 

It's half-time of extra time.

05:18 CET - The crowd got particularly excited when Lionel Messi stepped up to take a free kick within range, but he scuffed it straight into the wall in front of him. 104 minutes played now.

05:05 CET - Another 30 minutes - here we go!

Thiago Almada brought at least half of the stadium to life when shooting the ball into the side netting, convincing those watching from a particular angle that he had put Argentina in front.

04:52 CET - Nine minutes of stoppage time have begun in Kansas City.

It ended without a match winner. For the second time today, and the fourth time in the tournament, we're going to extra time! 

04:45 CET - We're almost at the 85-minute mark and it hasn't been one-way traffic since Breel Embolo's dismissal. Argentina are remaining patient when on the ball - it could almost be in their better interests to drag this game out beyond 90 minutes with their one-man advantage.

04:37 CET - The hydration break is well-timed as it gives both teams a bit of a time to cool off in more ways than one after a heated 20-minute period. 

It has been a second half dominated so far by Switzerland who are now up against it.

04:32 CET - Not long after the restart, the referee has been sent to the screen to check if Breel Embolo is guilty of simulation after Paredes was booked. Embolo wouldn't want a yellow of his own given he already has one...

Replays show Embolo clearly threw himself to the turf trying to win a foul. 

Breel Embolo has been sent off for a double-booking and Switzerland are down to ten!

Embolo is in tears and having to be pulled off the pitch by almost the entire Swiss dugout who circle around him for support. One of them has occupied him down the tunnel into the dressing room. 

04:30 CET - 1-1! SWITZERLAND huff and puff and they blow the Argentinian house down!

Dan Ndoye makes amends for his missed opportunity only a couple of minutes ago, and Argentina can hold out no longer after a 15-minute period of sitting off the ball. 

It was Ndoye who created and finished the goal via a one-two with Rodriguez.

04:20 CET - Switzerland have recorded the only two shots on target of the second half so far, adding further to the tension around the stadium - which looks to be a good 90% in favour of Argentina. No surprises there.

Make that three shots on target after Argentina keeper Martinez saves a header from Dan Ndoye that needed just a little more power.

04:05 CET - The action is back underway in Kansas City. 

03:50 CET - It's half-time in Kansas City and Alexis Mac Allister's first goal of the World Cup remains the difference between these two teams.

You can see from the Match Momentum graphic below how Switzerland (red) controlled the ball after the hydration break, but the small bars indicate they did not come particularly close to creating any goalscoring chances with it.

Not only had Switzerland not trailed at this World Cup, they had not been behind throughout the entirety of qualifying. They were the latest team in the world to do so.

03:35 CET - Switzerland continue to probe and press and have held the majority (56%) of uncontested possession. It has been nearly 20 minutes since either team had a shot on target.

03:25 CET - Let's take a look at the match momentum as the players grab a drink:

03:18 CET - Switzerland came out looking confident but that early goal looks to have changed their demeanour a little.

It's the first time at this World Cup they've trailed 1-0, so it's a new challenge to negotiate.

For Argentina, they have already amassed 15 goals in five-and-a-bit matches. 

03:08 CET - We're in the eighth minute of the match and Lionel Messi is the only one of the 22 players on the pitch yet to touch the ball. 

His first touch was met with a large roar and his second assisted a blocked shot for Mac Allister. 

His third and fourth touches delivered Argentina's first two corners of the match and Alexis Mac Allister nods home the second near the far post! Argentina score at the ten-minute mark!

Anyway, we'll stop counting now.

03:00 CET - The stadium pauses to acknowledge the passing of South Africa's Jayden Adams at age 25 before kick-off.

Argentina are also wearing black armbands to pay respect to former World Cup captain Antonio Rattin, who died at the age of 89.

02:50 CET - Not far now from the action in Kansas City as Switzerland look to qualify for their maiden World Cup semi-final at the fourth attempt. It's their first quarter-final since 1954. 

They kept Algeria and Colombia scoreless on their way here, also defeating Bosnia & Herzegovina and Canada in the group stage. 

It almost goes without saying that this will be by far the toughest test they face at this tournament so far.

02:03 CET - And here are the lineups for the fourth quarter-final, which kicks off in one hours time. The winner goes on to play England.

Argentina's starting lineup is unchanged. Switzerland have made one alteration to their run-on 11, replacing Ardon Jashari with Sevilla's Djibril Sow.

Jude Bellingham double leads England to semi-finals over Norway after extra time

01:54 CET - Jude Bellingham is our Player of the Match, rating 9.1 out of 10 on Flashscore's upgraded player ratings algorithm.

01:47 CET - ENGLAND ARE OFF TO ATLANTA! Another incredibly resolute defensive display backed up by Jude Bellingham's second brace in a week. They had to pick themselves up off the canvas after a draining night in Mexico City and they have outlasted a Norway side who didn't need extra time to defeat Brazil.

01:44 CET - The game ticks over to the 118-minute mark with Norway desperate but struggling to cut through the defence.

It has been another phenomenal English defensive effort, just as it was in Mexico City. John Stones is battling severe cramp.

Two minutes of stoppage time have been added on.

01:34 CET - A double save from Nyland keeps Norway in with a chance after Djed Spence and Bukayo Saka both take shots, from outside and inside the box respectively.

England bring Jude Bellingham off for Dan Burn. 

Bellingham became the first man since Maradona (1986) to score braces in back-to-back World Cup knockout games.

01:30 CET - Erling Haaland is out of the match, having been taken off for Jorgen Strand Larsen. 

Haaland was seen getting physical treatment to his legs at the end of 90 minutes and was not himself during that 15-minute period. 

It looks as though Norway could be running out of steam and out of options. 

01:26 CET - The teams are taking their extra time half-time break with England now 15 minutes away from just their third World Cup semi-final since 1966. 

Norway's back four have not looked stable since substitutions were made. 

01:17 CET - Djed Spence wins a penalty for England! A clash of tired legs between he and Oscar Bobb brings Spence down to ground and there was no hesitation from the referee in pointing to the spot.

The referee has been ushered over to the VAR screen to have a second look at it. There was a lovely little moment during the check where Erling Haaland embraced Jude Bellingham with a couple of encouraging words.

The referee overturns his initial decision - NO FOUL! The judgment was that Spence caused the contact by putting his right leg in front of Bobb.

That'll be a talking point regardless of the result of this match - it wasn't clear that the initial penalty decision was grossly incorrect.

01:07 CET - Play has resumed in Miami as both teams dig deep after 90 minutes in sapping humidity.

England get the first chance of the period as Harry Kane forces a save out of Nyland... AND BELLINGHAM GIVES ENGLAND THE LEAD LATER IN THE ATTACK!

Rogers had a shot from outside the box, Nyland was a tad late to react to it and Bellingham registered a typical poacher's goal from the save. 

Two goals at the Azteca, two goals in Miami. Bellingham is standing up when it matters most.

01:00 CET - Both teams were measured but positive during stoppage time, but it all amounted to a regulation time stalemate. Extra time is on the way! 

00:55 CET - The game is into the third minute of a seven-minute stoppage time period. It'll go beyond seven minutes as Heggem seeks some medical treatment. 

Nothing can be ruled out in these final few minutes of regulation time knowing these two sides.

Stones set up a powerful cross for Jude Bellingham but it had Bellingham reaching trying to complete a header that was off-target.

00:50 CET - Bukayo Saka deserved an assist for the way he patiently got past Wolfe on the right wing before firing a low cross across goalkeeper Nyland. There was a crucial clearance from Heggem to prevent any teammates from getting onto the end of it.

Harry Kane commits a foul during England's third corner kick and the game goes into the 89th minute 1-1. England bring on Morgan Rogers for Ezri Konsa, whilst Norway replace David Wolfe with Marcus Pedersen.

Djed Spence managed to close down an attempted clearance from the Danish goalkeeper Nyland and was almost able to turn it into a goal. 

00:38 CET - We're now into the final 15 minutes plus stoppage time with both sides looking more than capable of a dramatic match winner. In fact, as I was writing this, Norwegian defender David Wolfe headed a shot into the crossbar!

An Aursnes shot from the edge of the box was scuffed into the turf and it bounced towards a crowded box. Wolfe's header came mostly off his shoulder, Haaland had a chance to shoot from the goalmouth scramble but the angle was too difficult for him to close down. 

England created an opportunity of their own just moments later. 

It's end-to-end stuff now.

00:31 CET - Norway are making two attacking changes at the hydration break. Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb are on for Andreas Schjelderup and Alexander Sorloth.

Reece James replaces Anthony Gordon.

00:22 CET - Norway have lost Julian Ryerson to injury. He hobbles off to be replaced by Fredrik Aursnes at the 60 minute mark.

00:17 CET - NORWAY LEAD AGAIN - OR NOT! They thought they had scored from a corner. Torbjorn Lysaker Heggem deflected it into the net after a save from Pickford lands near his feet. Super quick reflexes to adjust and get his left shin in behind the ball. 

England complain about a potential foul on Elliot Anderson, who went down to ground as the corner was about to be delivered. 

The referee is going to check the video tapes in response. He calls a foul against Erling Haaland and disallows the goal! Haaland pushed both hands into Anderson's chest. As the foul occurred before the ball was kicked, the corner was retaken - and subsequently cleared. 

00:09 CET - England earn themselves a free kick almost immediately after half-time with Kane brought to the turf. The shot from Eze took a deflection off Anthony Gordon.

Speaking of Eze, we should mention that he and Saka came on for Rice and Madueke at the half-time break. Norway made no half-time subs.

00:03 CET - England assistant coach Anthony Barry spoke to the English world feed at the half-time break: "I feel like the climate impacted the first 20-25 minutes. I thought we were in total control of the game and dominant. From the water break we had far too many ball losses. We invited Norway into the counter-attacks. They were almost dormant until that point and then scored with an undeserved 'wondershot', I would say. We got the important goal ourselves before half-time which I feel released our lads. Now we've got it all to play for."

23:51 CET - Jude Bellingham's strike during added time of the first half sees the teams go into the sheds level at the break.

23:48 CET - ENGLAND EQUALISE right on the stroke of half-time with Jude Bellingham scoring his fifth goal of the tournament!

A couple of fantastic passes between Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon, with Gordon drilling a low pass to the top of the box where Bellingham finds it with the proper touch before working his way into some space in the box around two defenders.

23:35 CET - NORWAY LEAD against the run of play through new starter Andreas Schjelderup! Making just his second start of the tournament, he earned his promotion with two assists against Brazil and has followed that up with his first competitive international goal. 

What a time to do it...

23:25 CET - Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have touched the ball a combined nine times only (five and four) in the first 22 minutes of this tense affair. The ball has spent most of the game in Norway's half, with a couple of promising exchanges amounting to no big chances.

A check of the match momentum at the hydration break: 

23:15 CET - The pace of the game has been a little quicker than expected so far given the intense humidity. England are building up patiently with possession before flicking the switch and engaging in quicker attacks.

We're yet to see a shot attempt from either side after 15 minutes.

21:35 CET - The starting lineups are for the quarter-final between Norway and England in Miami. There are no huge surprises from the Scandinavians, with stars Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland both in their XI, but England's team has some eye-catching changes...

John Stones comes into the back four with Ezri Konsa moving to right back, while Noni Madueke has gotten the nod from Thomas Tuchel, starting ahead of Bukayo Saka.

21:00 CET - Only two hours from kick-off between Norway and England in Miami for the World Cup's third quarter-final, and the fans are probably starting to feel the nerves now.

For those that made the trip to Florida, they are probably feeling the heat, too. It is 31°C there currently, but the 'felt temperature' is as high as 41°C! In an open-air stadium, that is going to be really draining on the players, and a major factor.

18:15 CET - Norway's clash with England is the first game this evening, and so the one getting more attention, it feels, but there is the not-so-small matter of Switzerland vs Argentina to follow, too!

13:00 CET - Good afternoon! Welcome to what promises to be a thrilling day of World Cup quarter-final action. 

Getting the night started is a clash between Norway and England. Norway have been the story of the tournament by making it this far and whilst it has been an impressive collective effort, it is hard to look past the importance of their talismanic forward Erling Haaland. Without him, Norway simply wouldn't have mounted the comeback against Brazil in the last round. 

Beating five-time champions Brazil was a remarkable achievement for the small Scandinavian nation and with Haaland in unstoppable form, they will fancy doing the same again today against England.

England will be no pushovers, however, and the Three Lions have their own goal machine in Harry Kane.

Thomas Tuchel's side have grown into the tournament and their heroic back-against-the-wall performance against Mexico at the Azteca in the round of 16 was one of the most impressive in England's World Cup history. Kane and Jude Bellingham have been in inspired form throughout the tournament and it might just be England's double weapon that gives them the edge. 

Then comes the final quarter-final before the semi-finals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Argentina are the world champions and favourites against Switzerland but Lionel Scaloni's side haven't been wholly convincing in the knockout stages of this World Cup. After only avoiding a humiliating exit to Cape Verde by the skin of their teeth, Argentina then produced a dramatic late comeback against Egypt to avoid a major upset in the last 16.

Lionel Messi has been getting them out of trouble so far but Switzerland are a step up and so Scaloni will need his other forwards to help the little magician if they want to keep alive their dream of retaining the World Cup.

Switzerland, meanwhile, proved against Argentina's Copa America final opponents, Colombia, that they are a very difficult team to beat. They might not have loads of attacking firepower of their own but they are a really strong knockout team and they will look to make it as difficult for Argentina as possible.
