Our Picks: Leaders Leicester eye rebound and Toulouse flying high

This week's top picks feature a host of exciting matches in the pyramid of English football, as well as a couple of eye-catching clashes in two of Europe's biggest leagues.

Take a look at some of our top picks home and away worth keeping tabs on over the weekend:

Middlesbrough v Leicester - Ali Pollock

The Championship is full of entertaining fixtures and the standout one this weekend sees Middlesbrough host league-leaders Leicester City.

It already seems a foregone conclusion that the Foxes will return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, given their superb performances so far.

Enzo Maresca’s side have lost just twice and won 13 times already, the best ever start by a team in the Championship.

Middlesbrough are no pushovers, though, reaching the play-offs last season and finding themselves with just one loss in their previous 11 matches this campaign.

Like Maresca, Boro manager Michael Carrick has an exciting style of play and has quickly built a name for himself as one of the top coaches in the division.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is the standout player for the visitors and perhaps the best in the whole league but keep an eye on dangerous wingers Stephy Mavididi and Abdul Fatawu as well.

Their defence is equally brilliant having conceded just nine goals so far – with the likes of James Justin, Ricardo Pereira and Jannik Vestegaard all excelling.

For Middlesbrough, Sam Greenwood has three goals in his last five games and will be key to the hosts’ attempts to break through the Foxes’ defensive unit.

Chesterfield v Barnet - Anthony Paphitis

The standout teams in the National League go head to head when Chesterfield face Barnet in a highly-anticipated clash at the SMH Group Stadium.

The first and second-placed sides have set a high bar already this term with the visitors establishing a seven-point gap to Bromley in third.

After suffering defeat in last season's play-off final, Chesterfield have been lights out in their rebound campaign with 14 wins from 17 games - suffering just one defeat in the process.

The Spireites are the division's highest scorers so far with 43 goals which have been spread across the squad quite well - summer recruit Will Grigg netting eight, Tom Naylor with six and Liam Mandeville and Joe Quigley both with five.

Paul Cook's side are now 14 games unbeaten in all competitions with their latest outing a scalp over League One high-flyers Portsmouth in the FA Cup first round, which will have risen the spirits even further.

Their opponents in Barnet are no slouches, though, boasting a 12-game run without defeat of their own which will give them plenty of confidence ahead of Saturday afternoon's tilt.

The Bees head into the encounter knowing a win will take them top of the pile and despite having played a game more at this stage, points here will be key given there is only one automatic promotion spot available.

Following a play-off berth last term, Dean Brennan has continued to forge an outfit to challenge with striker Nicke Kabamba leading the charge.

He has 11 goals in 18 appearances so far and is followed by the surprising efficiency of Danny Collinge, who has six to his name as a central defender.

Chesterfield have won each of their last three games at home to Barnet and will be favourites to take the spoils again, but the visitors will hope that does not detract them from laying down a big title marker.

Lille v Toulouse - Ste Carson

Off the back of their famous 3-2 win over Liverpool in the Europa League, Toulouse may well fancy their chances against Lille this weekend.

Lille suffered 1-1 draw away at Slovan Bratislava in the Europa Conference League mid-week, but are poised nicely on the cusp of top four in Ligue 1.

A win over Les Violets could leapfrog them over Reims, who face champions PSG this weekend.

For Toulouse, who haven't started the domestic season well, beating Les Dogues could be crucial come the end of the season when European spots are claimed.

Lille will be feeling confident, though, having conceded just one goal in their last five league matches.

However, Toulouse haven't tasted victory in Ligue 1 for over a month (over relegation-threatened Metz).

Les Violets will need to use their win over Liverpool to inspire better form.

Lille are almost certainly going to be without star man Bafode Diakite, who picked up an injury recently - but it may provide Jonathan David an opportunity to step up.

For Toulouse, two men to keep an eye on are Thijs Dallinga and Frank Magri - both have three Ligue 1 goals apiece this season and both scored against Liverpool.

Fiorentina v Bologna - Joel Barnett

Bologna travel to Fiorentina on Sunday with both teams looking to battle their way into Champions League contention.

Separated by just a point either side of Roma in seventh, who face Lazio in the Rome derby later that afternoon, a win could move either team to within touching distance of the top four by the end of the weekend.

I Viola go into the match hoping to snap out of an unfortunate three-game losing streak in the league.

How they failed to win any of these matches - let alone fail to score - is anyone’s guess.

Against Empoli they enjoyed 72 percent possession, conceded a 95th minute penalty at Lazio, and peppered Juventus’ goal with 25 attempts to no avail.

While they curse their misfortune, their opponents on Sunday, I Rossoblu, have faced a daunting opening to the season including fixtures against league leaders Inter, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio and Milan, who stoically remain the only side to beat them this term.

Both managers - Fiorentina’s 45-year-old Vincenzo Italiano and Bologna’s Thiago Motta, 41 - have been hailed as rising stars in Italy for turning their mid-table teams into exciting European contenders.

The question now is whether they can convert their huge potential into promise.

Wrexham v Gillingham - Brad Ferguson

Two money bags of the lower leagues in English football collide on Saturday as Wrexham face Gillingham in what many predicted would be a shootout for the top spot in League Two before the season's start.

Things haven’t quite panned out for either side, though.

Wrexham have endured some up-and-down results across the earlier parts of the season and - while still sitting in third place and the current automatic promotion spots - their topsy-turvy scorelines suggest a bad few weeks could easily send them tumbling down what is shaping up to be a tight squeeze in the top half.

They’re just a point ahead of the chasing pack, level with Notts County above them in second, but seemingly a ways off Stockport who look ready to run away with the league altogether.

It’s not bad for the Dragons’ Hollywood owners but they may have hoped for a little more security at the top given their budget, even at this stage.

Meanwhile, it’s all gone a bit wrong for Gillingham.

The Kent side escaped relegation from the Football League altogether last season after a successful takeover saw a reinvented squad fly back up the standings.

They started this season in tremendous form, with fans and pundits expecting a fully-fledged tilt at winning the division at a canter after taking maximum points from their first four matches, including an opening day win away to the now-current league leaders.

But a roadblock in their form - two wins and five losses in the previous eight league outings - has seen the Gills tumble from the upper echelons to a rather sorry ninth, putting a bit of a dampener on the early season's excitement.

A result against the high-profile Welsh side could be enough to trigger their second coming ahead of an impending busy December schedule, but the form books are against them.

They’ll need to address a suddenly rather leaky defence quite urgently; Gillingham have shipped nine goals in their last five league games - their -6 goal difference is strikingly poor in comparison to the teams above and around them - plus they were resoundingly beaten 5-1 by Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy last month.

In contrast, Wrexham’s form is on the up; they’re currently on a 10-game unbeaten run across all competitions which includes seven games without a loss in the league.

The two sides haven’t crossed paths competitively for some 23 years - their last meeting coming as a 1-0 Wrexham win back in 2000 in League One, the old Second Division at the time.

Quite a few things have changed for both sides since then!
