The 2026 World Cup was held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was played in 16 modern stadiums.

23:13 BST - Now it's Switzerland's time to go close! Zeki Amdouni finds room in the box and takes a shot that Camilo Vargas gets down well to save. The match has suddenly come alive.
23:09 BST - The best chance of the game by far. Juan Quintero whips in a corner for Colombia and Jhon Lucumi jumps highest to thump a powerful header that cannons back off the crossbar. Agonising for Colombia!

According to Opta, Switzerland and Colombia's combined xG at the end of the second half was just 0.7. That's the lowest in normal time of any match at the 2026 World Cup.
22:55 BST - FULL-TIME! The referee blows the whistle and thankfully puts us out of our misery. Only 30 minutes of extra time to go - the exact time it has been since Colombia last attempted a shot in the game.

21:56 BST - While the action takes a break in Vancouver, the fallout from the earlier game in Atlanta between Argentina and Egypt has begun, with Pharaohs' coach Hossam Hassan saying his side had been "cheated" out of a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

21:52 BST - There was just nine combined touches in the opposition box in the first half, the lowest in a knockout match at this World Cup.
21:49 BST - HALF-TIME! Switzerland and Colombia go in level at the break. This could be the first match of the round of 16 to go to extra time at this World Cup. Let's hope there's a burst of inspiration in the second half.

Barton infamously sent off Miguel Almiron in the group stage match between Paraguay and Turkey, when he dramatically announced 'Decision is, RED CARD', which has since been turned into a comical dance anthem.

Switzerland are looking to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, with Colombia looking to reach the final eight for first time in 12 years.

You'd have thought fixtures against Cape Verde and Egypt would have seen them cruise into the quarter-finals, but nothing could be further from the truth. They have entertained us, that's for sure.

19:45 BST - Who will Argentina face in the quarter-finals? It will be either Switzerland or Colombia, who kick off in an hour and 15 minutes in what is the final last 16 fixture of this World Cup. Here are the starting XIs:

19:24 BST - Argentina were trailing as of the 78th minute, the latest any team has ever been two or more goals down in a World Cup game and come back to win without going to extra time.
19:13 BST - Here's an indication of the sheer weight of what Egypt were up against in that second half. They took their chances and were deserving of their lead, but the floodgates eventually opened.
19:09 BST - Egypt were 2-0 up in the 78th minute, and Argentina have won 3-2. That is the ruthless streak that champion sides have. Swagger in abundance.
19:06 BST - FULL-TIME! That's the end of the match and Argentina are through to the quarter-finals! We have been treated to some classics in this World Cup and Argentina have been on the winning side in two of them. If Argentina go on to win this World Cup, this game will live on in folklore.
19:03 BST - As you can imagine, Egypt are still unhappy, and the game is constantly being stopped for all manner of niggle.
18:56 BST - GOAL! WOW! The comeback is complete and what a goal to confirm it! Enzo Fernandez superbly heads home a Lautaro Martinez cross after Argentina had broken down the right in clinical fashion. A brilliant move with incredible accuracy in such a high-pressure situation. Egypt are absolutely livid as they feel they should have had a penalty on the other side when they lost possession. The referee is unmoved, as is VAR, and after one of the Egyptian staff is shown a red card for excessive protestations, the game continues.
18:49 BST - There were a little over four minutes between those goals, and how Argentina needed them. They're not completely out the woods yet, though. There is still the threat of another goal from Egypt.
18:48 BST - GOAL! Argentina are level and it's that man Lionel Messi who has stood up once again for his country! The ball bobbles around the area, and the striker stays calm to slam the ball home and potentially extend his and his team's stay at this World Cup.
18:46 BST - CHANCE! Some Lionel Messi magic ends with another cross into the box, but Lautaro Martinez can't put his header on target from close range.
18:45 BST - There are ten minutes plus added time still to go out there.
18:44 BST - GOAL! Argentina pull one back through Cristian Romero who heads home from a Lionel Messi cross.
18:35 BST - A hydration break, and a welcome one for Argentina who need to regather and take a breath.
18:34 BST - This is becoming a huge story, and England fans won't mind it one bit. If things stay this way, then England could have a much nicer semi-final on their hands if they get past Norway on Saturday night.
18:32 BST - GOAL! And this one will stand! Mostafa Ziko has made it two by finishing cooly on the back of a polished cross into the box by Haissem Hassan.
18:23 BST - GOAL RULED OUT! That is one of the great team goals right there, but it won't be allowed. Mostafa Ziko had the ball in the back of the net after running on to a perfectly timed pass from Mo Salah, which came after a slick team move down the right. However, VAR steps in to highlight a jersey pull on Lisandro Martinez when Egypt took possession. A real shame from an Egptian point of view, but they still lead.
18:15 BST - Argentina have started the half brightly, they are 40 minutes away from crashing out of the World Cup, after all. Rodrigo de Paul has a crack at goal but Mostafa Shobeir makes a comfortable save.

18:00 BST - While we wait for the start of the second half, here's how some fans have been watching the match in Egypt and Argentina.
The time is currently 8pm in Cairo, and 2pm in Buenos Aires.
17:53 BST - HALF-TIME: That's the end of the first half, where Egypt lead Argentina 1-0 thanks to a slick header from Yasser Ibrahim. But the plaudits really go to Mostafa Shobeir, who has managed three big saves so far, including a penalty from Lionel Messi.
17:41 BST - SAVE! What a save that is from Mostafa Shobeir. Nicolás Tagliafico pulls the ball back brilliantly for Julián Álvarez, and the latter fires it goalward with some power, but the Egyptian goalkeeper is once again equal to it. He's had a brilliant first half here in Atlanta.
17:30 BST - CHANCE! Alexis Mac Allister leaps up to meet a cross from Nahuel Molina, and does brilliantly to get there, but he heads it straight to the goalkeeper. That's a big opportunity missed.
17:28 BST - That's one of two hydration breaks out the way.
17:23 BST - SAVED! Lionel Messi goes right, and Mostafa Shobeir easily palms away the effort. Could that be a huge moment in this World Cup?
17:22 BST - Here comes Lionel Messi...
17:21 BST - PENALTY ARGENTINA! Haissem Hassan clatters into Nicolas Tagliafico and the referee has no hesitation in awarding the penalty. A very simple one to give, in fairness.
17:18 BST - This is the first time that Argentina have been behind in a game in this World Cup, and they have failed to win any of their last four matches when conceding first in the World Cup, since a victory over Mexico on 24 June, 2006.
17:16 BST - GOAL! Egypt are ahead! Yasser Ibrahim gets on the end of a fabulous cross from Marwan Attia to head home and give his side a shock lead!
17:11 BST - Argentina break down the right, and Rodrigo De Paul passes to an on-rushing Enzo Fernández to just tap the ball in. His strike is not a good one though, and ends up on the wrong side of the post. The flag went up for offside so it was academic in the end, but his confidence won't exactly have been lifted by that effort.
